The Royal Horseguards Hotel, London
First Impressions
The Royal Horseguards Hotel sits right where you’d want a proper London hotel to be — literally steps from the Thames with Big Ben practically winking at you from across the river. I mean, the location alone is pretty spectacular, but what really caught my attention was how this four-star property manages to feel both grand and welcoming without trying too hard. The building itself has this wonderful Victorian gravitas that you’d expect from Whitehall Court, yet somehow it doesn’t feel stuffy or intimidating when you walk through those doors.
Location & Neighborhood
You know what’s brilliant about staying here? You’re literally in the heart of Westminster — I could walk to Parliament in about three minutes, and Trafalgar Square is just around the corner. But here’s the thing most people don’t realize: despite being surrounded by all the major tourist spots, Whitehall Court itself feels surprisingly peaceful, especially in the evenings when the government offices empty out. The Thames path is right there too, which makes for lovely morning walks before the crowds descend on the London Eye.
The Room Experience
My room faced the river, and honestly, waking up to that view never got old — though I’ll admit the Thames-facing rooms do come with a bit of traffic noise during the day. The interiors strike this nice balance between classic British elegance and modern comfort. The beds are properly comfortable (always a gamble in older London hotels), and the bathroom was spacious enough that I wasn’t bumping into walls every time I turned around.
Dining & Atmosphere
The main restaurant downstairs serves decent British fare, though I found myself eating out most evenings simply because there are so many fantastic options within walking distance. What I really appreciated was the bar area — it’s got this clubby, old-world feel that’s perfect for an evening drink, especially if you’ve been trudging around London all day. The afternoon tea service is quite good too, if you’re into that sort of thing (and honestly, when in London, why not?).
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t the flashiest hotel in London, but that’s actually part of its charm. The staff genuinely know the neighborhood and can point you toward the best local spots, the building has real character and history, and you’re positioned perfectly for exploring central London without feeling like you’re camping out in a tourist bubble. Plus, that 8.4 rating reflects what I experienced — solid, reliable, and genuinely pleasant without any major surprises or disappointments along the way.
