First Impressions
The Staunton Hotel – B&B sits on a quiet stretch of Gower Street in London‘s Bloomsbury area, and honestly, you might walk right past it if you’re not paying attention. It’s housed in one of those classic Georgian townhouses that Camden does so well — nothing flashy, but there’s something reassuring about the brick facade and traditional entrance. This four-star B&B has that understated charm that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled onto something the guidebooks haven’t completely ruined yet.
The Neighborhood
Gower Street is actually perfect if you want to be in central London without feeling like you’re trapped in a tourist theme park. You’re literally a two-minute walk from Goodge Street tube station, which I mean, that’s gold in this city. The British Museum is practically around the corner, and UCL students wander these streets constantly, giving the area this lived-in academic feel. There’s a decent Pret down the street (because of course there is), but you’ll also find some proper local pubs tucked away if you explore a bit.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was compact but thoughtfully arranged — they’ve clearly put effort into making every square foot count. The bed was comfortable enough, and the en-suite bathroom was modern without trying too hard to be trendy. What surprised me was how quiet it was, considering you’re basically in Zone 1. The windows face the street, but Gower Street doesn’t get the heavy traffic that nearby Tottenham Court Road does, so you can actually sleep without earplugs.
Breakfast and Amenities
The breakfast setup is proper B&B style — cooked to order in a small dining room that feels more like someone’s front parlor than a hotel restaurant. They do a solid full English, and the staff actually remembers how you like your coffee after the first morning. There’s no spa or fancy gym here, but you know what? Sometimes you don’t need all that. The WiFi works reliably, and they’ve got a small lounge area where you can sit with a cup of tea and plan your day without feeling rushed.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t the kind of place you choose for Instagram photos or bragging rights. It’s the kind of place you book when you want a clean, comfortable base in an excellent location without paying Covent Garden prices. The staff treats you like a person rather than a room number, and there’s something refreshing about a hotel that does the basics really well instead of trying to be everything to everyone. For the price point and location, it’s honestly hard to beat — especially if you’re the type of traveler who spends most of their time exploring the city anyway.
