Overview
First Impressions
Sanctuary by the Shard sits right in the shadow of London’s most famous glass tower, and honestly, that’s both its biggest selling point and its most surprising feature. You’d expect a hotel this close to such a tourist magnet to feel touristy, but it actually manages to maintain a sense of calm that feels almost residential. The building itself is modern without being flashy — sort of understated in that way that makes you think they’re confident about what they’re offering inside.
Location & Neighborhood
Being in London means you’re walking distance to Borough Market (which, let me tell you, is where you want to be on a Saturday morning), and the Thames is literally a few minutes’ stroll away. What I really appreciate about this spot is that you can walk to London Bridge station without breaking a sweat, but Southwark itself has this village-y feel that most visitors miss entirely. The Shard dominates the skyline, sure, but turn down the right street and you’ll find yourself among Victorian terraces and quiet pubs that feel worlds away from the hustle.
The Room Experience
The rooms at this four-star property are thoughtfully designed — and I mean that in the best possible way. Each room feels like someone actually considered how you’d move through the space, where you’d put your suitcase, how the lighting works when you’re trying to read in bed. The bathrooms are particularly well done, with rainfall showers that actually have decent pressure (you know how hit-or-miss hotel showers can be). Large windows make the most of natural light, though honestly, some rooms have better views than others depending on which way you’re facing.
Dining & Amenities
The on-site restaurant focuses on modern British cuisine, and while it’s not going to win any Michelin stars, the food is solid and the atmosphere works well for both business dinners and casual meals. What I found most useful was the 24-hour room service menu — it’s limited but covers the essentials when you’re dealing with jet lag or just don’t feel like venturing out. There’s also a small fitness center that’s nothing fancy but has everything you need for a quick workout.
Why Guests Love It
Here’s what really sets this place apart: the staff seem to understand that travelers want efficiency without feeling rushed. Check-in is smooth, they’re genuinely helpful with directions and recommendations, and housekeeping is thorough without being intrusive. The parking situation is what you’d expect in central London — expensive and limited — but the concierge can help you sort that out. Most guests end up loving the balance this hotel strikes between being professionally run and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere that doesn’t feel corporate or stuffy.

"Nice apartment, nice neigbourhood and convenient location. The hosts need to work on communication!"
The apartment is in a great location, easily accessible from an airport and close/good connection to most sightseeing. Nice neigbourhood with everything one needs and nice strolls alongside Thames. A big plus for us as we had a stroller - a lift! There is a well equipped kitchen, big enough bathroom…
What could be improved: Cold! We traveled with two small children, ready to rest after a long day, but all the heaters were turned off (it was freezing outside) when we first areived, plus the balcony door was locked (with no key) but not properly closed so the cold kept coming in. We finally warmed the apartment up after 1,5 days!
The communication might had been better! We didnt get the checkin instructions until 10am the day of our arrival (what if we didnt have an internet connection?!). After asking about spare sheets (only one set was prepared although the booking was made for 4 persons) and trying to solve the balcony problem, we were told the person is not working on weekends - end of discussion, we received no more replies… Be sure to communicate via Booking platform, even if they say you can use whatsapp…
There is a big window between bedroom and kitchen (with blinds).

"Fab location, comfortable stay"
The location is great. It was nice to have a balcony as it was heat wave when we visited. The listing gave info about collecting keys from a location 10 minutes from the property but I messaged to explain I was travelling from Wales with 3 children and on one of the hottest days of the year. Host messaged and organised for a cleaner to do their apartment clean later so they could meet us at the property with keys which was really appreciated. The man was very pleasant and had waited as we were a bit delayed due to train issues.
Comfortable stay, can’t comment on the sofa bed as my boys slept on that, they said they slept ok.
I was exhausted so would have slept on a clothesline! Think the bedroom bed was comfortable enough, shame we couldn’t open for any breeze in the bedroom at night as there is no window, it’s got doors so for security obviously couldn’t open them whilst sleeping.
What could be improved: I burnt my fingers removing a meal from the oven as there was no oven gloves or even any tea towels so was trying to use a dishcloth.
Could also do with table mats to protect furniture if eating hot food. The TV volume didn’t work when on normal tv but did when we logged in to our Netflix ( which I’ve just realised I forgot to log out of 🙈)
Bathroom still had what looked like talc on the floor in places, the bath tap was dripping.
Fridge bulb needs replacing.
Wouldn’t take much to make it a better stay but it wasn’t bad by any means.

"Great location and spacious but needs a new bed/mattress."
Very close the station, river, transport and shops. kitchen looks new and is well equipped except coffee maker.
What could be improved: Key pickup is not near the apartment, so you need to be ready to drag luggage around the very busy London Bridge station area to pick up key and then go to the apartment. It needs a coffee maker (standard in most hotels and studios around London), and the mattress on the bed is old and uncomfortable (feels more like a box spring). There is no armoire or hanging rack to hang clothes on a hanger.

"Well worth a visit!"
Great location and price! Host was very engaging!
What could be improved: Heating on, when I arrived would have been good. Although soon warmed up!

"We were quite happy with the stay. The futon (main bed), is not a great mattress. The WiFi kept cu;"
There were no meals Good location. Quiet area, especially for overnight rest.
What could be improved: There were no breakfasts included, but none expected, as not advertised to do. Would have appreciated a few basic condiments ie. Salt, pepper, sugar. Some tea towels for washing up dishes for homemade meals in air b&b.
