Rose and Crown Stoke Newington
First Impressions
Walking past the Rose and Crown Stoke Newington on Church Street, you’d honestly think it’s just another Victorian pub — which it is, sort of. But step inside and you’ll realize this unique boutique hotel has transformed the upstairs into something quite special. The ground floor keeps that authentic pub atmosphere with locals nursing pints and proper pub grub, while the guest rooms above offer a completely different experience.
Location & Neighborhood
You know what I love about staying here? Stoke Newington still feels like a real London neighborhood rather than a tourist zone. Church Street has this brilliant mix of independent bookshops, vintage stores, and proper cafes where you can actually get a seat. Clissold Park is literally a five-minute walk away — perfect for morning runs or just escaping the city buzz for a bit. The transport links are decent too; you can get to central London in about 20 minutes via bus or Overground.
The Rooms
Each room has been individually designed, and I mean really individually — no cookie-cutter hotel vibes here. The one I stayed in had this gorgeous exposed brick wall and original Victorian features mixed with contemporary touches. The beds are seriously comfortable, and the bathrooms are compact but well-designed with proper rainfall showers. What surprised me was how quiet it gets at night, considering there’s an active pub downstairs.
Dining & Social Spaces
The restaurant downstairs serves classic British pub fare, but it’s actually quite good — their Sunday roast is worth planning around. Breakfast gets delivered to your room in a wicker basket, which feels charmingly old-school. I’d recommend venturing out for dinner though; the Turkish place two doors down is fantastic, and there’s a brilliant gastropub called The Jolly Butchers about ten minutes away that locals swear by.
Why Guests Love It
This place works because it doesn’t try too hard to be something it’s not. You’re essentially staying above a proper London pub in one of the city’s most authentic neighborhoods, and that authenticity extends to everything about the experience. The staff genuinely care about making your stay memorable without being overly formal about it. Plus, at this price point in London, finding somewhere with actual character and a 9.2 rating is pretty rare — most places are either soulless chain hotels or overpriced boutique spots in touristy areas.
