Montcalm Brewery, London City
First Impressions
Walking into Montcalm Brewery, London City, you immediately sense this isn’t your typical corporate hotel. The building itself has this gorgeous industrial heritage — it actually sits where Whitbread’s brewery once operated, and they’ve done something quite special with that history. The lobby feels substantial without being stuffy, with those high ceilings and exposed brick details that remind you this is authentic London architecture, not some modern pastiche.
Location & Neighborhood
Honestly, the Chiswell Street location is brilliant if you’re here for business or want to explore beyond the usual tourist spots. You’re right in the City of London, which means weekdays have this proper financial district energy, then everything goes wonderfully quiet on weekends. The Barbican Centre is literally around the corner — I mean, you can walk there in about three minutes — and if you’re into that brutalist architecture thing, you’ll love wandering those elevated walkways.
The Luxury Experience
This five-star property really delivers on the luxury front, but in an understated way that feels genuinely British rather than flashy. The room I stayed in had this perfect balance of contemporary comfort and nods to the building’s brewing past — think rich fabrics, quality furnishings, and those little touches like proper coffee equipment that actually matter when you’re settling in. The marble bathrooms are particularly impressive, with rainfall showers that you’ll honestly want to linger in after a long day walking around the city.
Dining & Amenities
The ground-floor restaurant serves solid modern British fare, though I’d recommend venturing out for dinner — you’re so close to some fantastic spots in Clerkenwell and Shoreditch. What really impressed me was their approach to service; the staff genuinely seem to know the neighborhood and can point you toward that perfect gastropub or suggest which route to take if you’re walking to St. Paul’s. There’s also a well-equipped fitness center and spa facilities that feel appropriately luxurious without being over-the-top.
Why Guests Love It
You know what sets this place apart? It’s got character without trying too hard, and the location gives you this authentic slice of London life. During the week, you’re surrounded by the energy of the financial district, but step outside on Saturday morning and the streets are yours to explore. The hotel strikes this nice balance between luxury and livability — it’s polished enough for important meetings but relaxed enough that you actually want to hang out in the lobby with a drink. Plus, having Liverpool Street station so close means you can easily hop on the Elizabeth line and be at Heathrow in about 45 minutes, which honestly makes a huge difference when you’re planning your departure.
