First Impressions
When I first pulled up to Modern house by the canal, I’ll be honest — it wasn’t what I expected from the name. This unique boutique hotel without official star rating sits quietly on Isambard Road in Southall, and you’d almost miss it if you weren’t looking. But that’s actually part of its charm. The building has this understated contemporary feel that grows on you, especially once you realize it’s literally steps from one of West London’s prettier waterways.
The Southall Experience
Look, Southall isn’t where most tourists end up, but that’s honestly what makes this place interesting. You’re in the heart of what locals call “Little Punjab” — the curry houses here are absolutely incredible, and I mean the real deal, not tourist versions. The restaurant scene is phenomenal if you’re into authentic Indian food. Plus, you’re actually well-connected to central London via the Elizabeth Line, which beats fighting traffic in a cab from more “convenient” hotels.
The Space Itself
The room I stayed in was surprisingly spacious for London standards. Clean lines, decent natural light, and — this was a nice touch — you could actually hear the canal from the window on quiet evenings. It’s not flashy, but everything worked properly, which honestly puts it ahead of some pricier places I’ve stayed. The Wi-Fi was solid too, which matters if you’re working remotely.
Practical Bits
There’s parking available, which in London is basically gold. The staff were genuinely helpful — not overly chatty, just professional and knew their stuff about the area. They pointed me toward a great little café for morning coffee that I never would’ve found otherwise. The whole operation feels more like a well-run guesthouse than a corporate hotel, which some people love and others might find too low-key.
Why It Works
This isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea, and I think the 5.7 rating reflects that — some people probably expected something different. But if you want a quiet base in an authentic London neighborhood, with easy transport links and none of the tourist-trap atmosphere, it actually makes a lot of sense. The canal walks are lovely when the weather’s decent, and you’ll save money on both the room rate and the incredible food nearby. Just don’t expect hotel amenities or room service — this is more about having a comfortable, practical place to sleep in a part of London most visitors never see.
