London Escape at Duke Avenue
First Impressions
Walking up to the London Escape at Duke Avenue, you immediately get that feeling you’ve found something a bit different. It’s tucked away on Duke of Wellington Avenue in Greenwich — honestly, the kind of street where locals actually live rather than just tourist spots everywhere you look. The building itself has this understated elegance that makes you think they didn’t need to try too hard to impress anyone.
The Greenwich Advantage
Here’s what I love about staying in Greenwich — you’re properly in London but without that constant crush of crowds in Zone 1. The Cutty Sark is basically around the corner, and Greenwich Park sprawls out just behind you with those killer views over the Thames. You can actually walk to the Observatory if you’re feeling energetic, or just hop on the DLR when you want to get into central London. Takes about 20 minutes to reach Canary Wharf, maybe 35 to get to Westminster — not bad at all.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was surprisingly spacious for London standards, and I mean that in the best way possible. Clean lines, decent storage (you know how rare that is), and a bathroom that doesn’t make you feel like you’re showering in a phone booth. The bed was properly comfortable — I’m talking the kind where you actually sleep through the night instead of tossing around. What really got me was the attention to little details: good lighting for reading, enough plugs near the bed, that sort of thing that makes you think someone actually stays in hotels themselves.
Food and Practical Bits
There’s a decent restaurant on-site, though honestly Greenwich has enough good eating spots that you’ll want to explore a bit. The staff pointed me toward a proper gastropub about five minutes’ walk away — turns out they know the neighborhood pretty well. Parking can be sorted if you’re driving, which is more than you can say for most London hotels. They’ve got it figured out, basically.
Why Guests Love It
This four-star place gets it right in ways that matter when you’re actually traveling. It’s not trying to be the fanciest hotel in London — it’s just being really good at what it does. The location gives you that village-y Greenwich feel while keeping you connected to everything else, the rooms are thoughtfully designed rather than just Instagram-pretty, and the whole experience feels more authentic than staying in some massive chain hotel in Piccadilly. You’ll sleep well, wake up in a genuinely interesting part of London, and probably find yourself planning your next trip back before you’ve even checked out.
You'll need to let the property know in advance what time you'll arrive.
