Crystal Palace B&B
First Impressions
Walking up to Crystal Palace B&B on Patterson Road, you immediately get that classic Victorian London feel — you know, the kind of red-brick terrace house that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a proper British neighborhood. The parking situation is actually pretty decent here, which honestly surprised me since most B&Bs in South London leave you circling the block. What struck me right away was how well-maintained everything looked; this isn’t one of those tired three-star places that’s clearly seen better days.
The Neighborhood Feel
Upper Norwood has this sort of residential charm that I really appreciate — it’s not touristy at all, but that’s exactly what makes it work. You’re genuinely staying where locals live, and Crystal Palace Park is literally a short walk away. The train connections from Crystal Palace station are actually quite good; I mean, you can get into central London without too much fuss, but you also get to retreat back to this quieter corner when the city gets overwhelming.
Your Room
The room I stayed in had that perfect balance of traditional charm and modern comfort that’s surprisingly hard to find. Nothing fancy, but everything you need — the bed was genuinely comfortable, and I slept really well despite being someone who usually struggles in new places. The owners have clearly put thought into the little details; there’s proper tea-making facilities (not just those terrible instant sachets) and the shower actually has decent water pressure.
Morning Ritual
Breakfast happens in this cozy dining restaurant area that feels more like someone’s front room than a commercial space. The full English is done properly — none of that pre-cooked nonsense you get at chain hotels — and they’re flexible about timing, which I appreciated since I’m not really a morning person. The hosts are the kind of people who remember your name and actually seem to care whether you’re enjoying your stay.
Why Guests Love It
With a 9.4 rating, Crystal Palace B&B clearly gets something right that bigger hotels often miss. It’s that personal touch, really — staying here feels more like visiting distant relatives than checking into accommodation. The value is excellent for what you get, especially considering how expensive London can be, and you’re still well-connected to everything the city offers while avoiding the chaos of staying right in the thick of it.
