Overview
First Impressions
Windsor Road Retreat sits on a quiet residential street in Richmond, and honestly, you might walk right past it if you’re not paying attention. It’s housed in what looks like a gorgeous Victorian townhouse, and there’s something refreshingly unpretentious about the whole setup. The entrance feels more like you’re visiting a well-traveled friend’s home than checking into a typical hotel — which, I suppose, is exactly the point.
The Neighborhood Feel
Richmond’s got this perfect balance where you’re close enough to central London (about 20 minutes on the District line) but far enough out that you actually hear birds in the morning instead of traffic. Windsor Road itself is lined with those classic London plane trees, and you’re literally a five-minute walk to Richmond Green — one of those spots locals guard jealously. The High Street’s got everything you need, plus some genuinely good pubs that haven’t been turned into tourist traps yet.
What Makes It Different
This place doesn’t have an official star rating, but that’s actually part of its charm. Each room feels completely different — some have original fireplaces, others have these amazing bay windows that flood the space with light. The owners have clearly put thought into every detail without going overboard with it. You know what I mean? It’s stylish but not trying too hard to impress you.
The Practical Stuff
The restaurant downstairs serves breakfast that’s way better than it needs to be — proper coffee, local ingredients, and they’ll actually remember how you like your eggs if you’re staying more than a night. There’s limited parking on the street, but honestly, you probably won’t need a car here anyway. Richmond’s perfectly walkable, and the transport links are solid if you want to head into town.
Why Guests Love It
I think what people respond to here is the authenticity of it all. It’s not trying to be something it’s not — just a really well-run, thoughtfully designed place to stay in one of London’s nicest areas. The 8.7 rating makes sense when you consider that guests aren’t paying for marble lobbies or doormen in top hats, but they are getting genuine hospitality and a location that feels like real London rather than tourist London. If you want to experience Richmond like someone who actually lives there, this is your spot.

"Very enjoyable"
MaryBeth was very welcoming, the room was well appointed and comfortable and the breakfast choice was amazing. The location was perfect for my purpose, meeting family to enjoy the Christmas lights at Kew Gardens.

"Perfect place to stay if you are that side of London."
The room was lovely, very comfy and homely and had everything you could need. Lovely little extra touches like the cookies and drinks! Breakfast was delightful - fresh, choice of things and all laid out!

"Lovely home from home - would recommend."
The home is in a lovely location, within walking distance to the tube & Kew Gardens. It's on a quiet road and parking was easy. The room is very clean, warm and with nice touches such as biscuits/cakes & a few drinks. A place to put your bag and hang your clothes was provided. WiFi was fine. The breakfast was very nice with a good selection provided.
We could hear the airplanes overhead, but not so much as to disturb our sleep.
Bathroom is warm and spacious. Although not ensuite (down a short corridor) it was for our private use. We were able to borrow a dressing gown too. I really enjoyed relaxing in the bath, something I rarely do nowadays.
Mary Beth was very helpful, responsive and friendly. Most of the time it felt like you had the whole house to yourself.
What could be improved: We missed not having coffee in the room. There isn't a stand up shower; bath is beautiful but tricky to use the shower attachment to rinse yourself off without accidentally getting the floor wet (no screen/curtain).

"Perfect"
A beautiful house with a homely feel. Impeccable in terms of decor, cleanliness, communication, facilities and location.
What could be improved: Parking is quite tight but wasn’t a problem. Had I needed to stay beyond 10, the host would happily have obtained a permit for me.

"A home from home. Highly recommended."
Felt like a home from home. Clean as a whistle. Lovely bedding. Lots of plug sockets. Very quiet street. Breakfast was served beautifully. Even though we were in someone’s house, we still had complete privacy. Even the cat, Bowie, was chilled and very friendly and I’m a dog person. Highly recommended.
What could be improved: Having to reverse down the street in my car to find a parking space - eek it was narrow! 😂
