Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to The Montague On The Gardens, you immediately get that classic London townhouse vibe — red brick Georgian facades lined up like something out of a period drama. The entrance feels understated in the best way, with doormen who actually remember your name after the first day. I mean, it’s refreshing when a hotel doesn’t try to wow you with marble everything, you know?
Location That Actually Makes Sense
Here’s what I love about Bloomsbury — you’re genuinely in the middle of everything without the tourist chaos. The British Museum is literally a two-minute walk (I timed it), and Russell Square tube station gets you anywhere in London pretty quickly. But honestly, the real winner is having those garden squares right outside your window. You can grab coffee and sit in the actual gardens the hotel overlooks, which feels like having a private park.
The Rooms
The room I stayed in had this sort of English country house thing going on — not too fussy, but definitely more character than your typical chain hotel. The bed was properly comfortable, and the bathroom had one of those rainfall showers that actually works. What struck me was the attention to detail — decent lighting for reading, enough outlets where you need them, and windows that open (a rarity these days).
Food and Atmosphere
The hotel’s restaurant serves solid British fare with a modern twist, though I’ll be honest — the afternoon tea is where they really shine. The Blue Door Bistro has this cozy, neighborhood feel that makes you want to linger over breakfast. The staff here gets it right — attentive without hovering, and they know their wine list well enough to make decent recommendations.
Why Guests Love It
This four-star property hits that sweet spot where you feel looked after without the stuffiness of some London hotels. The service feels personal — they’ll help you snag theater tickets or recommend that little gastropub around the corner that locals actually go to. Plus, there’s something satisfying about staying somewhere that’s been part of the Bloomsbury landscape for decades, where the building itself has stories to tell.

"A lovely stay in a royal setting, close to the British Museum and West End."
For special occasions, it's so nice to be in a place that is different from the norm. This isn't just any hotel, it's beautiful, cosy, and staff treat you like a true guest. It's in a fantastic spot in the heart of London, just a 15-20 minute walk away from the major theatres.
What could be improved: Our toilet was difficult to flush but that's about it!

"An unforgettable birthday for my husband in a beautiful hotel."
In one word: amazing! As a surprise, I had booked a weekend in London and a room at the Montague on the Gardens Hotel. Because I had ordered chocolate as a surprise, the first contact was immediately very friendly and service-oriented.
When we arrived, we were very early and our room wasn't ready yet. Which is logical, so we took a nice walk through London and enjoyed all that London has to offer.
When we returned, enjoying the delicious homemade chocolate milk provided by the hotel, we were told that we had been upgraded. And what an upgrade! This was the icing on the cake to make my husband's birthday unforgettable!
Completely carefree, with all the amenities and a beautiful historic hotel in the heart of London. What more could you want?! Everyone is incredibly friendly and helpful. Thank you everyone at the Montague on the Gardens!
We’ll definitely come back next year!
