The Grand at Trafalgar Square
First Impressions
Walking up to The Grand at Trafalgar Square, you can’t miss that imposing Victorian facade — it’s one of those buildings that makes you feel like you’re stepping into a piece of London history. The doormen actually remember your name after the first day, which honestly surprised me. Inside, the lobby strikes this perfect balance between grand and welcoming, with marble columns that don’t feel stuffy and lighting that’s warm rather than harsh.
Location & Neighborhood
You know what’s brilliant about this spot? You’re literally steps from Trafalgar Square — I mean, you can see Nelson’s Column from some of the upper floors. The National Gallery is a two-minute walk, and you can stumble back from Covent Garden without needing the Tube. But here’s the thing most people don’t realize: Northumberland Avenue stays surprisingly quiet at night despite being so central, so you actually get decent sleep.
The Room Experience
My room had these tall windows that flooded the space with light during the day, and the beds are properly comfortable — not just hotel-firm. The bathrooms are compact but thoughtfully designed, with decent water pressure (always a gamble in older London buildings). What I appreciated was the mix of period details with modern touches — crown molding and marble alongside USB ports exactly where you need them.
Dining & Amenities
The restaurant downstairs serves solid British fare with a contemporary twist, though I’ll be honest — the breakfast is where they really shine. Full English done properly, plus they accommodate dietary restrictions without making a fuss about it. There’s also a cozy bar area that feels like a gentlemen’s club but without the intimidation factor — perfect for a nightcap after exploring the city.
Why Guests Love It
This four-star hotel gets the fundamentals right without trying too hard to impress. The staff genuinely seems to enjoy their jobs, which makes a difference in how they treat guests. It’s not the flashiest place in London, but it delivers exactly what you want: comfort, character, and a location that puts the best of the city at your doorstep. For the price point and that unbeatable Westminster location, it’s honestly hard to find better value in central London.
