First Impressions
The Grafton Arms Pub & Rooms sits on a quiet stretch of Grafton Way in London’s Fitzrovia area, and honestly, it’s exactly what you’d hope for in a proper British pub-hotel hybrid. The building has that classic Victorian charm you see all over Camden, with dark wood and brass fittings that feel authentic rather than touristy. Walking in, you immediately get the sense that this place has been serving pints and hosting guests for decades — which it has.
The Pub Experience
The ground floor restaurant and pub area is where this place really shines. I mean, you’re staying above a proper London pub, which sounds either brilliant or terrible depending on your perspective. Actually, it works beautifully here. The atmosphere downstairs is lively without being rowdy, and the food is surprisingly good — proper pub grub done well, not the frozen stuff you sometimes get. The staff clearly know their regulars, and you’ll find yourself chatting with locals over a pint of Fuller’s or whatever’s on tap.
The Room
Upstairs, the accommodations at this four-star establishment are compact but thoughtfully designed. My room was on the smaller side (this is London, after all), but everything you need is there — comfortable bed, decent shower, and enough space to spread out your things without feeling cramped. The windows actually open, which is nice for fresh air, though you might catch some street noise in the mornings. The decor strikes a good balance between traditional pub character and modern comfort.
Location & Getting Around
Here’s where staying at The Grafton Arms really pays off — Fitzrovia is one of those neighborhoods that feels properly London without the tourist crowds of Covent Garden or the chaos of Oxford Street. You’re a five-minute walk from Goodge Street tube station, and Warren Street isn’t much further. The British Museum is literally around the corner, and you can easily walk to places like Charlotte Street for dinner or over to Regent’s Park when you need some green space.
Why Guests Love It
What makes this place special is that it doesn’t try to be something it’s not. You’re staying in a traditional London pub that happens to have really nice rooms upstairs, not a sterile hotel trying to manufacture character. The combination works because both elements are done well — the pub feels authentic and welcoming, while the rooms are clean and comfortable. Plus, there’s something quite satisfying about stumbling downstairs for breakfast (they do a proper full English) or a nightcap without having to venture out into the London weather.
London’s apartments welcome long stays with terrace views, museum access, and bike routes to hidden mews streets.
