First Impressions
The Park Avenue Hotel sits on a surprisingly quiet stretch of Clapton Common — honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from the exterior, but stepping inside completely changed my perspective. This three-star spot has that old-school London charm that’s becoming harder to find, with original Victorian features mixed in with thoughtful modern touches. The lobby feels more like a friend’s well-decorated living room than a typical hotel reception area.
Location & Neighborhood
You know what? Hackney gets a bad rap, but this part of London is actually brilliant once you know where to look. Clapton Common itself is this lovely green space where locals walk their dogs and kids play football — it’s proper neighborhood life, not tourist London. The overground station is maybe a 10-minute walk, and from there you’re in central London in about 20 minutes. Plus, there’s this fantastic Turkish restaurant just around the corner that the hotel staff recommended — best lamb I’ve had in ages.
The Room Experience
My room was on the second floor (no lift, just so you know), and while it wasn’t huge, it made clever use of every inch. The bed was surprisingly comfortable — I mean, you don’t always expect that from a mid-range place, but I slept really well. What I loved was the little seating area by the window that looked out over the common. There’s something quite soothing about watching neighborhood life unfold below while you’re having your morning coffee.
Practical Touches
The staff here actually seem to care, which isn’t always a given. They keep a folder at reception with local recommendations that go way beyond the usual tourist spots — proper insider knowledge about markets, pubs, and shortcuts through the area. Parking can be tricky around here (it’s London, after all), but they’ll help you figure out the permit situation if you’re driving. The WiFi worked perfectly throughout my stay, and housekeeping was thorough without being intrusive.
Why Guests Love It
This isn’t a place that tries to be something it’s not — and that’s exactly why it works. The Park Avenue Hotel gives you a genuine slice of London life without the hefty price tag of central hotels. You’re staying in a real neighborhood where people actually live, not just a tourist bubble. Sure, it’s not flashy, but there’s something refreshing about a place that focuses on the basics and does them well. If you want to experience London like a local rather than just tick off attractions, this is your spot.
