Old Compton Soho
First Impressions
Walking into Old Compton Soho, you immediately know you’re in the thick of things — I mean, you’re literally on one of London’s most vibrant streets. This three-star spot doesn’t try to be something it’s not, and honestly, that’s refreshing. The lobby feels modern but lived-in, with dark wood accents and mood lighting that makes you forget you’re staying above some of Soho’s busiest nightlife.
Location & Neighborhood
You know what’s brilliant about this place? Step outside and you’re surrounded by proper London character — gay bars, late-night eateries, and that constant buzz that makes Soho feel alive at all hours. The Greek Street restaurant scene is literally around the corner, and if you need groceries or just want to people-watch, Berwick Street Market is maybe a three-minute walk. Sure, it gets loud on weekends (we’re talking proper street-level noise), but that’s Soho for you.
The Room Experience
My room was compact — well, tiny if I’m being honest — but cleverly designed with everything tucked into place. The bed was surprisingly comfortable for a mid-range hotel, and the rainfall shower actually had decent pressure. What I appreciated most was the blackout curtains; trust me, you’ll need them when the street party continues until 3 AM below your window.
Practical Considerations
Don’t expect a full English breakfast spread here — there’s a small continental setup that does the job, but honestly, with Borough Market and countless cafés within walking distance, you’re better off exploring. The staff actually gave me solid recommendations for nearby spots, which felt genuine rather than scripted. WiFi worked well throughout my stay, and the air conditioning (thank goodness) kept things comfortable during my summer visit.
Why Guests Love It
Look, Old Compton Soho works because it embraces what it is — a no-frills base camp in one of London’s most electric neighborhoods. You’re not paying for marble lobbies or concierge service; you’re paying for location and decent comfort. If you want to stumble home after exploring Chinatown’s late-night dim sum spots or catch a West End show without dealing with the Tube, this place delivers exactly that. Just pack earplugs and embrace the chaos outside your door.
