Mason & Fifth, Bermondsey
First Impressions
Mason & Fifth, Bermondsey sits inside what used to be an Italian warehouse β and honestly, they’ve done something pretty special with the space. The moment you walk into The Italian Building on Dockhead, you can tell this isn’t your typical four-star setup. There’s this industrial-chic thing happening that actually works, with exposed brick and high ceilings that make you forget you’re in London’s busiest borough.
Location & Neighborhood
Bermondsey’s got this edge to it that I really appreciate β it’s not trying to be fancy like Shoreditch, but it’s definitely not boring either. You’re literally a ten-minute walk from London Bridge, which means Borough Market is right there for your weekend food adventures. The Shard looms overhead, sure, but you know what? From some angles on Dockhead, it actually looks impressive rather than imposing.
The Room Experience
My room had this clever loft-style design that made the most of the building’s industrial bones. The bed was solid β not groundbreaking, but the kind where you actually sleep well after walking around London all day. What I appreciated most was the attention to small details: proper reading lights, enough outlets near the bed, and a shower that didn’t require engineering skills to operate.
Dining & Social Spaces
The ground floor restaurant does this modern British thing without being pretentious about it. I mean, the menu changes seasonally, but they’re not reinventing fish and chips or anything. What really works is how they’ve designed the common areas β there are these little nooks where you can actually work on your laptop without feeling like you’re camping in a lobby. The coffee’s decent too, which matters more than hotels usually realize.
Why Guests Love It
Look, Mason & Fifth isn’t trying to be the flashiest hotel in London, and that’s exactly why it works. It’s got character without the attitude, and the Bermondsey location means you’re close enough to everything that matters but far enough away to avoid the tourist crowds at your doorstep. Plus, the staff actually seem to know the neighborhood β they’ll point you toward the good curry place around the corner, not just the obvious tourist spots.
