The Northern line runs right through Hendon Central, so you can reach central London in about 25 minutes without the premium prices of staying in Zone 1.

What strikes you immediately is how homely everything feels. My room had mismatched furniture that somehow worked perfectly together — a vintage writing desk, floral curtains that looked like they’d been chosen with care rather than bulk-ordered.
