Overview
First Impressions
The Royal Forest – A Heartwood Inn honestly caught me off guard in the best way possible. You know what I expected driving down Ranger’s Road? Some generic chain hotel, maybe. What I found instead was this four-star gem that feels more like stumbling upon a well-kept secret in Chingford. The building itself has this understated elegance — not flashy, but there’s something about the way it sits among the trees that just works.
Perfect Epping Forest Location
Here’s the thing about staying here — you’re literally on the doorstep of Epping Forest, which most London hotels can’t claim. I mean, you can actually hear birdsong from your room, and that morning mist rolling through the trees? It’s something else entirely. The E4 postcode might sound remote if you’re not familiar with the area, but you’re actually well-connected to central London while being tucked away from all that chaos.
The Rooms Tell a Story
Each accommodation feels thoughtfully designed rather than cookie-cutter corporate. Mine had these lovely forest views (though honestly, most rooms do), and the attention to detail was impressive — quality linens, proper blackout curtains, and a bathroom that didn’t feel like an afterthought. The Wi-Fi actually works properly too, which isn’t always a given in these more characterful properties.
Dining Worth Staying In For
The on-site restaurant surprised me — I’d planned to venture out for dinner, but ended up eating there twice during my stay. They source locally where possible, and you can taste the difference. The breakfast particularly stands out; it’s one of those places where they’ll actually cook your eggs properly rather than keeping them warm under heat lamps for hours.
Why Guests Keep Coming Back
What really sets this place apart is how it bridges that gap between countryside retreat and practical London base. The parking situation is refreshingly stress-free — no circling blocks or paying extortionate daily rates. Staff seem to genuinely care about the place rather than just going through the motions. That 8.9 rating makes complete sense once you’ve experienced how smoothly everything runs here, from check-in to those little touches that show someone’s actually thinking about guest experience.

"Excellent"
The bed was extremely comfortable
What could be improved: The breakfast was very nice. The only reason my review didn't get a 10 is that the toast was overdone and cold

"Amazing!!"
The whole place is a gem. Staff from hotel, bar, and restaurant are friendly and helpful. The rooms are cozy and worth the price. Food at restaurant is tasty with good value for money. We enjoyed our stay and definitely will be back to celebrate more special moments with you. Thank you!

"Comfortable and enjoyable stay, Good food. Will stay again."
Nice location, nice building. I once stayed here before when it was a premier inn and it was quite run down.
The place has been done out to a really high standard, looks like alot of money has been spent on the place.
The bar restaurant area is very nice. Evening meal was lovely, can't comment on breakfast as I opted out.
I had a snug double room which was one of the nicest rooms I've stayed in anywhere, and I stay away alot!
Would definitely stay here again if working in the area.

"Mostly very good, will definitely return when in the area visiting family."
Our rooms were very good, spotless and well presented. Great shower!
Staff all courteous and helpful.
What could be improved: Only one complaint concerning drinks at breakfast.
Coffee and juice were served by cup/glass, when we asked for a second drink we were not allowed! Very odd in a good quality hotel. We offered to pay extra but the staff were unwilling although in every other way they were both very good.
Perhaps you could re-think your breakfast beverages.

"A little break, in a little cosy room, in a big building with a lot of history. X"
The room was very nice the little touches like the radio, ear plugs and door handle sign were fantastic. Even the little note and the treats. I couldn’t eat as I have a nut allergy but my partner really enjoyed.
What could be improved: We honestly loved everything. It was just a long walk to our room.
