Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Elegant 1-BR Retreat in Ilford Centre Ley on Ley Street, you’d honestly miss it if you weren’t paying attention — it’s tucked into a typical residential block that feels refreshingly normal after all those flashy hotel lobbies. The entrance is understated, which I actually appreciated since it means you’re staying somewhere that feels more like a proper London flat than a tourist trap. This four-star setup isn’t trying too hard to impress, and sometimes that’s exactly what you want.

Location & Neighborhood

Here’s the thing about Ilford — it gets overlooked by most visitors, but you’re actually in one of those pockets where real London life happens. Ley Street itself is busy enough that there’s always something going on, with proper curry houses and corner shops that stay open late (trust me, you’ll use them). The Central Line station is a solid ten-minute walk, maybe twelve if you’re dragging luggage, which puts you into central London in about thirty minutes. Not the fastest commute, but definitely manageable.

The Space

The one-bedroom layout works really well — there’s actually space to spread out your stuff without tripping over suitcases every five minutes. The kitchen is compact but functional, with everything you need if you want to grab groceries from the Tesco down the road instead of eating out constantly. I mean, London restaurant prices can add up fast, so having the option to make your own breakfast or late-night snacks is genuinely useful. The room itself feels bigger than typical London accommodations, though the street-facing windows do let in some traffic noise.

Daily Experience

You know what I liked? The whole setup feels like you’re actually living in London temporarily rather than just visiting. There’s proper storage space, decent WiFi that doesn’t cut out during video calls, and the shower has actual water pressure — these details matter when you’re staying more than a couple nights. The building’s got that slightly worn-around-the-edges feeling that most London residential areas have, but everything works as it should.

Why Guests Appreciate It

This place hits that sweet spot for travelers who want independence without sacrificing comfort. You’re not getting daily housekeeping or a concierge, but you are getting space, privacy, and a genuine neighborhood experience that most hotels can’t offer. The 7.3 rating makes sense — it’s solid and reliable rather than spectacular, but honestly, that’s often exactly what you need for a London stay. Plus, you’ll save money on meals and late-night convenience store runs, which adds up over a longer visit.

"With the exception of the entrance and difficult access to the keys the apartment was great"
The apartment was comfortable and located close to the town centre which made it easy to shop . It was spacious and provided enough linens for the period. Loved the way the kitchen was laid out even though I had a problem with the fridge provided
What could be improved: The entrance to the apartment was filthy and was grimy and covered with moss. I was not informed that the apartment could only be accessed using a steep flight of stairs, so it was difficult to get my luggage into the apartment all by myself. The fridge door kept coming open, there were no door shelves in the fridge to store drinks like milk or water and the freezer compartment had rust on the shelves

"Would never use the property again."
Nice decor but work in progress.
What could be improved: False advertisement that there was private parking with property but there wasn’t and I was advised by host upon messaging them once I had got there to find near by parking. One of the main reasons of choosing the property was private parking so I could park my vehicle. Bathroom tap constantly running, but host sent instructions to deal with it. Bedroom blind broken, mirror in bedroom was covered in finger prints.
