First Impressions
I’ll be honest — CannyCity isn’t what you’d expect from a typical hotel. Tucked away on Brunel Street Works in Newham, this unique boutique hotel without official star rating feels more like stumbling into someone’s well-designed creative project than checking into a standard accommodation. The industrial building has been transformed into something that’s part hotel, part art installation, and it works surprisingly well.
The Newham Experience
Here’s what I really appreciate about staying in this part of London — you’re genuinely experiencing how locals live, not just the tourist bubble. Newham isn’t polished like Kensington, but that’s exactly the point. You’ve got proper Caribbean food down the street, the kind of corner shops where people actually know each other’s names, and you’re still just a short trip from central London. The Excel Centre is practically next door if you’re here for an event.
The Space Itself
Each room feels different — and I mean that in the best way. Mine had exposed brick walls and these huge windows that made the space feel much bigger than it actually was. The design leans heavily into the industrial aesthetic, but they’ve softened it with some thoughtful touches. You know what surprised me most? How quiet it was, considering we’re in East London.
What Makes It Work
The staff here genuinely seem to care about what they’re doing. They’ll give you actual recommendations for the area, not just the standard tourist spots everyone suggests. There’s a small restaurant that serves breakfast and dinner — nothing fancy, but the kind of food that hits the spot after a long day walking around London. I actually ended up eating there more than I planned because the atmosphere was so relaxed.
Why Guests Keep Coming Back
Look, CannyCity isn’t going to work for everyone. If you need room service and a concierge, this probably isn’t your place. But if you want to stay somewhere with character — somewhere that feels like it has a story — then you’ll get it. The 7.3 rating makes sense to me; it’s not perfect, but it’s memorable in ways that matter more than thread count or marble bathrooms. Plus, you’re getting a genuine slice of London life that most visitors never see.
You'll need to let the property know in advance what time you'll arrive.
