Overview

First Impressions

I’ll be honest — when I first pulled up to Britannia Inn Hotel on Mansfield Road, I wasn’t expecting much from this three-star property. But you know what? Sometimes the places that look modest from the outside end up surprising you in the best ways. The Victorian-era building has that classic British hotel charm, and while it’s not flashy, there’s something reassuring about its no-nonsense approach to hospitality.

Location & Getting Around

Here’s the thing about staying in Ilford — you’re actually in a pretty smart spot if you know how to work it. The hotel sits right on one of the main roads, which means buses run frequently into central London. I mean, you’re looking at about 30-40 minutes to get into the heart of things, but honestly, that’s not terrible for the price point. There’s a Tesco Express just down the road, and if you walk about ten minutes, you’ll hit Ilford High Road where there’s actually decent shopping and some proper curry houses.

The Room Experience

My room was… well, functional. Clean linens, a decent shower that actually had good water pressure (which isn’t always a given in older British hotels), and a TV that worked perfectly fine. The décor is definitely dated — we’re talking floral patterns that probably haven’t been updated since the ’90s — but everything felt properly maintained. The bed was comfortable enough, though the walls are a bit thin, so you might hear your neighbors if they’re being loud.

Practical Considerations

There’s parking available, which is actually a big deal around here since street parking can be a nightmare. The staff at reception were genuinely helpful when I needed directions, and they sorted out a small issue with my booking without any fuss. Breakfast isn’t included in the standard rate, but there are plenty of cafés nearby if you want something proper in the morning.

Why Guests Keep Coming Back

Look, Britannia Inn Hotel isn’t going to win any design awards, and it’s not trying to. What it does offer is reliable, clean accommodation at a price that won’t break the bank. If you’re someone who plans to spend most of your time exploring London rather than lounging in your hotel room, this place makes a lot of sense. The transport links work in your favor, the area feels safe, and you’re getting honest value for money — which, let’s face it, isn’t easy to find anywhere near London these days.

What could be improved: I waited a month for the deposit to be returned. I had to write to them twice and ask for the money

"Good value for money!"
It is a very ‘you get what you pay for’ hotel in terms of facilities and building, however, the rooms were clean, beds weren’t uncomfortable. I had read reviews prior to them turning you towards another hotel (saying they’re not booked directly with them). This did happen to us and I was told that I was going to have to move to a different hotel (around the corner). However, after explaining that I was with my daughter and wife, the receptionist worked things around for us to stay at the Britannia. Really appreciated that!
What could be improved: Nothing really. Very good value for money.

"Don't expect any 'normal' or 'actual customer service' - WiFi does not work, tv's are non functi"
The bed was comfortable to some extent
What could be improved: The breakfast options were not clear, I arrived at the reception ready to pay for Breakfast, I was handed a hard boiled egg still in its shell, raw bread and some spreads - it wasn't made clear that I could use any communal services to go and toast my bread - I went on a whim as I passed a door labelled "Kitchen" Would have been useful if I was shown or given the explanation that this is where I would make breakfast. The entertainment (TV) was absolutely useless, didn't function, none of the channels worked, the WiFi stopped working after about 30min - I ended up wasting my data allowance to be able to watch 'something' to keep my self entertained. I didn't have a number to call for support or rectify this. The receptionist was not helpful. When shown to my room she had disappeared through the many doors I had to use to access my room, didn't wait for me and practically waited for me to find my way until I caught up to show my room. Absolutely dreadful service.

"Just acceptable. Expect no bells nor whistles."
They do offer breakfast. Though it is effectively coffee/ tea, boiled eggs and bread/ toast. There is a microwave and a toaster oven to toast as required. The room could accommodate the 4 of us with 3 beds for 1 child (sofa bed), 1 senior (single bed) and 1 married couple (double bed). The room is equipped with a microwave, electric kettle that are on a desk with chair like a workstation. Although, the parking is limited, the parking is on their property and is free and unlimited for the duration of our stay. They will also help to get you parking as needed,
What could be improved: Breakfast is always coffee, tea, boiled eggs and bread (white and wheat). There are packets of butter put out, but not on ice, so be aware of a them possibly going bad. There is also jam. For the 7 days and 6 nights that we were there, nothing changed for the breakfast menu. The kitchen staff did not wear sanitary gloves either, if that bothers you when the dip their hand into the bread bag and serve it on to the plate. The room could accommodate the 4 of us with 3 beds, however, understand that the 3rd bed is a sofa bed that is left pulled out if you pay for the family room and kept closed up if you do not request family room. So for us there was no where to sit except on the beds and otherwise the room was cramped. The room is equipped with a microwave, electric kettle that are on a desk with chair like a workstation. This meant that much of the desk was not useable for use as a workstation, the chair leg was broken. The attending house keeper replaced the chair with 1 from another unit. Also, the microwave as clearly damaged inside, since when we opened the microwave door there was burn marks coming from the microwave emitter. The housekeeper took that microwave to have it replaced / repaired on day 2. Even after leaving on day 7, no replacement was made available. We had to the breakfast area to use that microwave.

"Did not meet my expectations at all."
Nothing
What could be improved: Staff attitude, The £100 deposit asked for and as I tried to tell your duty receptionist if I knew this was how you operated I would have cancelled my booking made thru Trivago. I was cold at night because the duvet was so thin, the shower did not work well and the left hand door was out of its rail and was letting water on to the floor, the standard of finish in the bathroom was terrible. Your staff in reception did not say good morning to you as you went out, too busy talking or looking at mobile phones. The bed head board was not fitted correctly there was a gap that the pillows kept going down.
