The Z Hotel Covent Garden
First Impressions
The Z Hotel Covent Garden is one of those places that immediately tells you what it’s about — smart design in a tiny footprint. Tucked on Bedford Street, this three-star hotel occupies a narrow Georgian building that’s been completely reimagined for modern travelers who don’t need sprawling suites but want everything to work perfectly. The lobby is basically a hallway, but honestly, it’s so well done that you’re not thinking about space — you’re thinking about how clever it all is.
Location & Neighborhood
You’re right in the heart of London‘s theater district here, and I mean properly in it. Covent Garden Market is literally a two-minute walk, and you can practically hear the street performers from your window on weekends. The Royal Opera House is around the corner, Leicester Square is five minutes south, and if you need the Tube, both Covent Garden and Leicester Square stations are close enough that you’ll never think twice about getting anywhere. What I really love is that you’re surrounded by proper London pubs — there’s a fantastic one called The Lamb & Flag just down the street that’s been serving drinks since the 17th century.
The Room
Let me be clear about this — the room is small. Like, really small. But it’s also brilliantly designed in a way that makes every inch count. The bed takes up most of the space, but it’s genuinely comfortable, and there’s clever storage built into every possible corner. The shower is one of those rainfall types that actually works (you know how hit-or-miss hotel showers can be), and the whole bathroom feels larger than it should thanks to good lighting and mirrors placed just right. The windows open onto Bedford Street, so you get a bit of London street life without too much noise.
Smart Details
What makes this place work are all the little things they got right. There’s a proper coffee machine in every room — not some terrible instant thing — and the WiFi is fast enough that you can actually work if you need to. The air conditioning works quietly, which matters more than you’d think in a building this old. Downstairs, there’s a small lobby area with a few tables where you can grab breakfast or just sit with a coffee, and they’ve managed to create this sense of space even though the whole building is narrow as anything. The staff knows the neighborhood really well too — they’ll point you toward the good coffee shops and the theaters that actually have tickets available.
Why Guests Love It
This isn’t a hotel for people who want to spend time in their room — it’s for people who want to be out exploring London but come back to something that feels thoughtful and well-designed. You’re paying for the location and the attention to detail, not for square footage. I’ve stayed here twice now, and both times I’ve been impressed by how they’ve managed to create something that feels modern and comfortable in such a constrained space. If you’re the type who needs a big bathroom and lots of luggage space, look elsewhere. But if you want to be right in the middle of everything and don’t mind compact living, this place delivers exactly what it promises.
