The Sanctuary House Hotel
First Impressions
The Sanctuary House Hotel sits on a quiet corner just steps from Westminster Abbey, and honestly, you might walk past it if you’re not paying attention. It’s tucked into a Victorian building that feels properly London β no flashy entrance or towering glass, just solid red brick and the kind of understated charm that actually works better than all the glitz. The moment you step inside though, you realize this three-star place punches way above its weight.
Location Magic
Here’s what I love about the location β you’re literally around the corner from Big Ben and Parliament, but somehow you’ve escaped the tourist chaos. Tothill Street is one of those London streets that locals use as a shortcut, which means you get to feel like you’re in on a secret. Walk five minutes and you’re at Westminster Abbey, but walk the other direction and you’ll find yourself in St. James’s Park feeding the pelicans (yes, actual pelicans).
The Room Experience
My room was compact β let’s be honest about that β but thoughtfully designed in a way that made every inch count. The bathroom was surprisingly spacious, and the bed was one of those firm English ones that you either love or hate (I loved it). What really got me was the attention to detail: proper thick curtains that actually block out the street lights, decent water pressure, and β this matters more than you’d think β enough outlets placed where you actually need them.
Dining and Atmosphere
The ground floor restaurant doubles as a proper British pub, and it’s where the hotel really shows its personality. You know what? The fish and chips here are better than most places charging twice as much in Covent Garden. I ended up eating there two nights in a row, partly because I was tired from walking around Westminster all day, but mostly because the atmosphere felt authentically local rather than tourist-trap generic.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t the kind of place with a fancy spa or marble everything β it’s a neighborhood hotel that happens to be in one of the best neighborhoods in London. The staff actually seem to enjoy working there, which you notice immediately, and they know the area well enough to give you directions to places that aren’t on every tourist map. For the price point and that location, honestly, it’s hard to beat if you want to stay somewhere that feels like London rather than just being located there.
