The Red Lion Hotel sits right on High Road Leytonstone, and honestly, it’s one of those places that surprises you. From the outside, you might think it’s just another London pub-hotel, but step inside and there’s actually a warmth that makes you feel like you’ve found something special. The staff greeted me like I was expected, not just another booking number.
Location & Getting Around
Leytonstone gets overlooked by most tourists, but that’s exactly why I liked staying here. You’re in proper East London — the real deal, not some sanitized tourist zone. Leytonstone tube station is literally a five-minute walk, and you can be in Central London in about 20 minutes. Plus, you know what? The neighborhood has this great mix of proper British pubs and some surprisingly good international food spots that locals actually use.
The Room Experience
My room was clean and comfortable — nothing fancy, but everything worked properly, which matters more than you’d think. The bed was firm (thank goodness), and I actually slept well despite being on a busy road. They’ve clearly put thought into the basics: good shower pressure, enough plug sockets, and blackout curtains that actually block light. For a three-star place, the attention to detail impressed me.
Food & Drink
The downstairs restaurant serves proper pub food with a few modern touches — I had their fish and chips, and it was exactly what I wanted after a long day exploring London. The portions are generous, and the prices won’t make your wallet cry. What I really appreciated was that locals come here too, so you’re not stuck in some tourist bubble eating overpriced mediocre food.
