The Old Bakery – Stay in what was the dirty dusty old store rooms
First Impressions
The Old Bakery – Stay in what was the dirty dusty old store rooms has to be one of the most honest hotel names I’ve ever encountered. Located on a quiet mews in London’s Palmers Green area, this four-star property absolutely delivers on its promise of character — and then some. The moment you step inside, you can actually sense the history in these converted Victorian store rooms, though thankfully minus the dust they mention in the name.
Location & Neighborhood
Palmers Green might not be the first area tourists think of, but honestly, that’s part of its charm. You’re in proper residential London here, about 20 minutes from central London by train from nearby stations. The mews setting means it’s incredibly quiet — I mean, you’d never guess you’re still technically in the city. There’s a decent Turkish restaurant just around the corner, and the local high street has that authentic North London feel without the tourist crowds.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in still had traces of the original bakery architecture — exposed brick walls and these wonderfully uneven floors that reminded you this place has stories to tell. What impressed me was how they’ve managed to fit modern amenities into such a characterful space without losing the soul of the building. The bed was properly comfortable, and the bathroom, while compact, had everything you needed including a surprisingly powerful shower.
Practical Details
Look, this isn’t a place with a grand lobby or 24-hour room service, but that’s not what you’re here for. Parking can be found on the street — it’s residents’ bays during the day but free in the evenings and weekends, which actually works out quite well if you’re using this as a base for exploring London. The whole setup feels more like staying in a friend’s converted workspace than a traditional hotel, and I mean that in the best possible way.
Why Guests Love It
You know what really struck me about The Old Bakery? It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something special that other travelers haven’t caught onto yet. The 9.5 rating makes perfect sense when you consider what you’re getting — genuine character, a peaceful location that’s still well-connected, and rates that won’t break the bank for London accommodation. It’s not trying to be something it isn’t, and there’s something refreshing about that honesty in a city full of places that oversell and underdeliver.
You'll need to let the property know in advance what time you'll arrive.
