First Impressions
You know what struck me about The Hidden Cottage? It actually lives up to its name — I walked past it twice before spotting the discreet entrance on Asmuns Place. This four-star gem sits tucked away in Golders Green, and honestly, that’s part of its charm. The Victorian facade looks like any other residential building until you notice the subtle signage and realize you’ve found something special.
The Neighborhood Feel
Golders Green isn’t exactly central London, but that’s the point. You’re in a proper residential area where locals actually live — there’s a fantastic bagel bakery just around the corner that opens at 6 AM, and the High Street has this lovely mix of independent shops and cafes. The Northern line gets you into central London in about 20 minutes, which I found perfectly reasonable. Plus, Hampstead Heath is literally a 10-minute walk away if you need green space.
The Room Experience
My room felt more like staying in a well-appointed friend’s guest bedroom than a typical hotel. The exposed brick walls and period features give it character, but they’ve added modern touches where it counts — excellent Wi-Fi, a proper shower with decent water pressure, and blackout curtains that actually work. The beds are comfortable without being overly fancy, and there’s enough storage space that I didn’t have to live out of my suitcase for a week-long stay.
Dining and Practical Bits
There isn’t a full restaurant on-site, which initially worried me, but the continental breakfast setup in the cozy dining room works perfectly. Fresh pastries, decent coffee, and they’ll accommodate dietary requirements if you mention them ahead of time. What I really appreciated was having access to a shared kitchenette — nothing fancy, but perfect for storing leftovers or making a quick cup of tea at odd hours.
Why Guests Love It
The 9.3 rating makes complete sense once you understand what this place is about. It’s not trying to be a glossy chain hotel with every amenity under the sun. Instead, it delivers on the basics exceptionally well while giving you a genuine taste of residential London life. The staff remembers your name after day one, the building has character without being shabby, and you feel like you’re staying somewhere with actual personality. If you want to experience London beyond the tourist zones while still having easy access to everything, this place hits that sweet spot perfectly.
London’s apartments welcome long stays with terrace views, museum access, and bike routes to hidden mews streets.
