First Impressions
Honestly, The Foresters Arms caught me completely off guard. What looks like a traditional pub from the outside transforms into something quite special once you step through the doors — it’s this unique boutique hotel that doesn’t fit into neat categories, and that’s exactly what makes it interesting. The whole place has this warm, lived-in feel that you just don’t get at chain hotels.
Location & Neighborhood
Forest Hill isn’t exactly where most tourists end up, but that’s actually part of the charm here. You’re in a proper South London neighborhood where real people live, with the train station just a few minutes’ walk away — you can be in central London in about 20 minutes. The surrounding streets have that leafy, residential vibe with independent shops and cafes scattered about, plus Horniman Museum is practically around the corner if you’re into quirky local attractions.
The Room Experience
My room was small but thoughtfully designed, with original features that reminded you this building has stories to tell. The bed was surprisingly comfortable, and I loved the little details — proper tea-making facilities, decent lighting for reading, and a bathroom that managed to feel modern without losing character. You know what struck me most? The quiet. For being on a main road, the soundproofing was really quite good.
Dining & Social Spaces
The pub downstairs serves as the hotel’s restaurant, and it’s where the place really comes alive. The food is solid gastropub fare — nothing revolutionary, but well-executed dishes using quality ingredients. I mean, where else can you grab a proper pint and fish and chips, then just head upstairs to your room? The atmosphere in the evenings draws a nice mix of locals and hotel guests, creating this authentic London pub experience that tourists usually have to work much harder to find.
Why Guests Love It
This place works because it doesn’t try too hard to be something it’s not. You get genuine character, reasonable rates, and a slice of real London life without sacrificing comfort. The staff actually seem to care about what they’re doing, and there’s parking available if you’re brave enough to drive in London. Sure, it’s not fancy, but it’s the kind of place that grows on you — I found myself looking forward to coming back each evening rather than just using it as somewhere to sleep.
