Overview
First Impressions
The Fairfield Basement Studio isn’t what you’d expect from a four-star place — and honestly, that’s exactly why it works. Tucked away on a quiet residential street in Crouch End, this converted basement space feels more like staying at a design-savvy friend’s place than a typical hotel. The entrance might catch you off guard since you’re literally walking down into what was once someone’s lower level, but the moment you step inside, you realize they’ve done something pretty special here.
The Space
The room itself is surprisingly airy despite being underground — they’ve installed these clever light wells that bring in natural light throughout the day. What really impressed me was how they maximized every inch without making it feel cramped. The kitchenette is actually functional (not just decorative like some places), complete with a proper fridge and everything you need for simple meals. I mean, you’re not going to host dinner parties, but morning coffee and late-night snacks? Absolutely sorted.
Location & Neighborhood
London can be overwhelming, but Crouch End has this village-like feel that makes you forget you’re in one of the world’s biggest cities. You’re about a 10-minute walk to Crouch End Broadway where there’s this great mix of independent cafes, vintage shops, and proper pubs — not the touristy kind. The Tube connection isn’t direct (you’ll need to hop on a bus to Finsbury Park), but honestly, that’s part of the charm. You get to see how actual Londoners live rather than bouncing between tourist hotspots.
What Makes It Work
Look, a 7.7 rating might not scream “book immediately,” but sometimes those middle-ground scores hide real gems. The owners clearly put thought into the details — decent Wi-Fi, blackout curtains that actually block light, and a shower with proper water pressure. There’s no restaurant or fancy amenities, but the local spots more than make up for it. Plus, you’ve got parking available, which anyone who’s tried to drive in London will tell you is worth its weight in gold.
Why Guests Keep Coming Back
What strikes me most is how this place attracts return visitors who want something different from the standard hotel experience. You’re getting privacy, your own space to decompress, and a genuine neighborhood feel — all without paying Zone 1 prices. The basement setup might sound odd on paper, but it’s actually quite cozy once you settle in. It’s perfect for travelers who want to experience London like a temporary resident rather than just another tourist rushing between attractions.

"Overall a fab little place and won’t hesitate to stay again!"
The location was great felt safe and quiet. The apartment was a decent size, bed was comfy, kitchenette was great even though I didn’t use much of it.
What could be improved: There was a bit of noise that didn’t bother me like said in a previous review but one morning someone in the house came home at 4am which woke me, and loudly walked about in what I assume was heels and banging cupboards etc . That was annoying but not awful and it wouldn’t stop me staying again!

"Nice comfortable stay in good location for the price."
Everything was good. Overall very good for the location and price.
What could be improved: Some minor wear and tear in the property. But nothing that makes your stay uncomfortable.

"Convenient for my purposes"
Clean and fresh. Had everything I needed
What could be improved: The mattress was upside down, so I was sleep on the springs. It was too heavy for me to turn over.

"Nice stay in bustling neighborhood"
I really liked the location. Crouch End is a wonderful area to be.
What could be improved: Seemingly minor things make a big difference – for example - there should be hooks and shelves in the bathroom. The bathroom cabinet door opens straight into your face (because of the location of the cabinet). There should also be more shelves in the kitchen area.
There needs to be an ability to lock the door on the suite side, connecting to the house.

"Very good"
Cute little place, has everything it needs. The surrounding area is really nice.
What could be improved: It is definitely smaller than it appears to be in the pictures, guess they were taken with wide angle. Also the bed is really quite small for two people.

"Affordable hideaway in Crouch End"
Location was perfect for connecting with friends, dining out, commuting to my rehearsals and the general vibe. The suite looks bigger in the pictures, but was adequately stocked with what we needed for our stay, and was outstanding value for money, especially for London!
What could be improved: The connecting door to the main house was not lockable on our side, so that was a bit weird. Other occupants of the house got up early and arrived home after we were in bed, so we got woken up by conversation and footsteps pounding up/down stairs -- coming from the country, that was more of a city adjustment than a complaint.

"Thanks for my stay. Maybe next time"
Close to shops etc. quiet. Close to transport and my family too.
What could be improved: The bed mattress pillow and bedding a very tired. Made sleeping a bit uncomfortable. Used the fan on the warmer nights.
Shower area small, so would be uncomfortable for larger people. Thanks

"Very good"
Location was really close to Crouch End.
What could be improved: Beds not so comfortable. Apartment was a bit too warm for good sleeping. Wifi not good. No lock on door to neighboring apartment where host lives.

"Lovely location, clean and tidy, just needs some minor TLC."
Location was wonderful. Super clean and tidy. Had everything we needed. Everything was as expected from the photos - they were very accurate and we knew the facilities would be basic. Found the bed really comfy. Easy check in. Very good value for money. Easy to park nearby.
What could be improved: Very thin walls and floors - was woken up at 2:30am with a slamming door, the sound of someone on the loo (!) and footsteps on the wooden floor. We were supplied with earplugs but I still woke up, so didn’t get great sleep the first night. Second night one of the wardrobe doors fell off in the middle of the night onto the floor, which made a loud slam. So another poor night’s sleep sadly. It felt like the apartment needed some minor updating and repairs. Not sure much can be done about the noise. Wouldn’t recommend it for light sleepers like me.
