The Deluxe Barbican Duplex
First Impressions
Walking up to The Deluxe Barbican Duplex on Whitecross Street, you’d honestly never guess what’s waiting inside. The entrance is pretty understated — actually, I walked past it twice the first time I visited. But that’s sort of the point with these four-star boutique places in London; they don’t need to shout about what they offer.
The Space
Once you’re inside, the duplex layout becomes immediately clear, and it’s genuinely impressive. The main living area feels surprisingly spacious for central London, with these massive windows that flood the place with natural light. The kitchen is fully equipped — I mean, you could actually cook a proper meal here if you wanted to, though honestly, with Borough Market just a short walk away, why would you? The spiral staircase leading to the bedroom upstairs adds this nice architectural touch that makes the whole place feel more like a private residence than a hotel room.
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s what I love about this spot — you’re right in the heart of things but tucked away on a quieter street. The Barbican Centre is literally around the corner, which means world-class theater and art exhibitions are on your doorstep. But you know what’s even better? You can walk to Smithfield Market in about five minutes, and the energy there in the early morning is something else entirely. There’s also decent parking nearby if you’re driving, though honestly, the transport links here make a car pretty unnecessary.
Comfort & Amenities
The bedroom upstairs is where this place really shines. The bed is comfortable — not revolutionary, but solid — and the windows up there give you these nice glimpses of London rooftops. The bathroom has this modern rainfall shower that actually works properly (you’d be surprised how rare that is). What impressed me most was the attention to small details: proper blackout curtains, enough electrical outlets where you actually need them, and storage space that makes sense for travelers.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t the fanciest place in London, but it gets the fundamentals right. You’ve got the space to spread out, a proper kitchen if you need it, and you’re staying in one of the most culturally rich neighborhoods in the city. The fact that it’s an apartment-style setup means you can actually live a bit like a local rather than feeling trapped in a traditional hotel room. For the price point and the location, it’s honestly hard to beat — especially if you’re the type of traveler who wants to explore beyond the typical tourist circuit.
London hotels keep travelers close to Tower Bridge views, iconic shopping streets, and tube lines to world-class museums.
You'll need to let the property know in advance what time you'll arrive.
