First Impressions
Walking up to The Columbia on Lancaster Gate, you’ll notice it’s one of those classic white-fronted Victorian buildings that line this particular stretch — honestly, it blends right into the neighborhood in the best possible way. The lobby isn’t trying to wow you with marble and chandeliers, but it’s clean and welcoming, with that sort of understated charm you’d expect from a well-run three-star place in this part of town.
Location & Getting Around
Here’s what I love about staying here — you’re literally a two-minute walk from Lancaster Gate tube station, which means you can be in Oxford Circus in about fifteen minutes without breaking a sweat. London can be exhausting to navigate, but this spot makes it actually manageable. Hyde Park is right across the street, and I mean right there — perfect for morning jogs or just escaping the city buzz when you need a breather.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was compact but smartly laid out, which is pretty much what you’d expect in this price range in central London. The bed was comfortable enough, and the ensuite bathroom — while small — had decent water pressure (something you can’t always count on in older London buildings). What surprised me was how quiet it was considering you’re on a busy street; the windows do a solid job of keeping the traffic noise at bay.
Breakfast & Dining
The breakfast setup is straightforward — a decent continental spread with the usual suspects plus some hot options. Nothing fancy, but it does the job and saves you from hunting down overpriced coffee shops first thing in the morning. There’s no full-service restaurant, but honestly, you’re in Westminster Borough — some of London’s best food is within walking distance anyway.
Why Guests Keep Coming Back
Look, The Columbia isn’t going to revolutionize your travel experience, but it gets the fundamentals right. The staff actually seems to care about helping you out (they gave me solid recommendations for nearby pubs), and there’s something refreshing about a place that doesn’t oversell itself. You’re paying for a clean, comfortable base in an excellent location — and that’s exactly what you get. For the money, especially considering you’re staying in Zone 1 London, it’s hard to argue with the value proposition here.
