The Abbey Notting Hill
First Impressions
The Abbey Notting Hill sits on a quiet tree-lined street in Pembridge Gardens, and honestly, you could walk right past it if you’re not paying attention. It’s housed in one of those classic Victorian townhouses that London does so well — white stucco facade, black railings, the whole nine yards. The entrance feels more like stepping into someone’s well-appointed home rather than a hotel lobby, which is actually pretty refreshing after dealing with those massive chain places.
The Neighborhood Feel
What I love about this spot is that you’re genuinely in Notting Hill, not just staying somewhere that claims to be. Portobello Road market is literally a three-minute walk away — I mean, you can hear the weekend buzz from your window if you’re facing the right direction. The area around Pembridge Gardens has that lived-in feel where you’ll see locals walking their dogs and popping into the corner shops, but you’re still close enough to Hyde Park that you can be there in ten minutes on foot.
The Room Experience
The rooms at this three-star place are smaller than what Americans might expect, but that’s just London for you. What they lack in space, they make up for with character — think original Victorian features mixed with modern touches that actually work. My room had this great bay window that looked out onto the garden square, and the bathroom was compact but well-designed. The bed was comfortable enough, though if you’re over six feet tall, you might find yourself playing footsie with the wall.
Daily Rhythms
Breakfast happens in what feels like a converted dining room downstairs, and it’s the kind of setup where you might end up chatting with other guests whether you planned to or not. They do a decent full English, but honestly, with Borough Market and all the great cafes around Notting Hill, you might want to venture out. The staff genuinely seems to know the neighborhood — they pointed me toward a great pub on Ladbroke Grove that I never would have found otherwise.
Why Guests Keep Coming Back
Look, The Abbey Notting Hill isn’t trying to be something it’s not. It’s a solid, unpretentious place to stay in one of London’s most characterful neighborhoods. You’re paying for the location and the authentic Victorian charm, not for a concierge service or a fancy spa. If you want to feel like you’re actually staying in Notting Hill rather than just visiting it, and you don’t need someone to carry your bags or turn down your bed, this place delivers exactly what it promises. Plus, there’s something to be said for a hotel where the staff remembers your name after the first night.
