First Impressions
The 4 isn’t what you’d expect from the outside — honestly, I walked past it twice before realizing this converted Victorian house in London‘s Lambeth was actually my destination. It’s one of those places that feels more like staying at a design-obsessed friend’s home than a traditional hotel, and I mean that in the best possible way.
The Space
This unique boutique hotel only has four rooms (hence the name), which means you’re never fighting for attention or dealing with crowded lobbies. Each room has been meticulously designed with a different theme — mine had this gorgeous wallpaper that somehow managed to be bold without being overwhelming. The attention to detail is pretty remarkable, actually — from the custom lighting to the way they’ve preserved original Victorian features while adding modern touches.
Location & Neighborhood
Lambeth isn’t the first area most tourists think of, but that’s exactly what makes it interesting. You’re a quick walk from the Thames, and the Imperial War Museum is literally around the corner if you’re into that sort of thing. What I really loved was how residential it feels — you get a sense of actual London life rather than just the touristy bits. The tube connections are solid too, so getting into central London takes maybe 15 minutes.
The Experience
The owners — and I think they actually live on-site — treat this more like a curated experience than just accommodation. There’s no traditional restaurant, but they’ll arrange breakfast or point you toward the best local spots (their coffee shop recommendation down the street was spot-on). The whole place has this relaxed, almost residential vibe where you feel like you’re discovering something special rather than just checking into another hotel.
Why Guests Love It
Look, if you want room service and a concierge desk, this isn’t your place. But if you appreciate thoughtful design, personal service, and staying somewhere that feels genuinely unique, The 4 delivers something you can’t get at the big chains. It’s the kind of place where you actually remember the details months later — the way the morning light hits that particular corner, or how quiet it gets at night despite being in the middle of a major city.
