Students Only, Silver Studio Lower Level at Portobello Residence
First Impressions
Students Only, Silver Studio Lower Level at Portobello Residence isn’t your typical London hotel — and honestly, that’s exactly what makes it work. Tucked away on Alderson Street in North Kensington, this four-star student-focused accommodation feels more like staying in a well-designed urban apartment than a stuffy hotel. The moment you walk in, there’s this refreshingly modern vibe that somehow still feels homey.
Location & Neighborhood
You’re basically in the heart of one of London‘s most vibrant areas here. Portobello Road is literally around the corner — I mean, you can walk to the famous market in about three minutes. What I love about this spot is that you get the authentic West London experience without the tourist crowds right outside your door. The Ladbroke Grove tube station is close enough that getting into central London is actually pretty easy, but you’re far enough out to feel like you’re living like a local.
The Studio Experience
The silver studio on the lower level is cleverly designed — they’ve managed to pack everything you need into a compact space without it feeling cramped. There’s a proper kitchenette (which, let’s be honest, is a game-changer when you’re trying to save money in London), and the room layout makes smart use of every corner. The bed is surprisingly comfortable, and there’s enough storage that you won’t be living out of your suitcase the entire time.
Practical Perks
What really sets this place apart is how they’ve thought about what travelers actually need. The Wi-Fi is solid — I never had issues working from the apartment — and the shower pressure is better than half the places I’ve stayed in London. There’s no on-site restaurant, but with that kitchenette and the incredible food scene in Notting Hill just steps away, you won’t miss it. Plus, there’s parking available if you’re brave enough to drive in London.
Why Guests Love It
This isn’t the place for travelers who want someone bringing them towels every day or a concierge arranging theater tickets. But if you’re the type who likes independence and wants to experience London more like a resident than a tourist, it’s honestly perfect. The student-oriented setup means everything is efficient and no-nonsense, but the four-star touches — like the quality furnishings and attention to detail — keep it comfortable. You know what really impressed me? How quiet it stays despite being in such a lively neighborhood. I slept better here than I have at much pricier places in Zone 1.
