Overview

First Impressions

Walking into South Kensington Retreat feels more like arriving at a friend’s incredibly well-appointed apartment than checking into a hotel. The Point West building itself has this understated elegance that’s so typical of London — nothing flashy, just solid Georgian-style architecture that whispers rather than shouts. You’ll find it tucked away in one of those quiet residential streets that make you feel like you’ve discovered a secret corner of the city.

The Perfect South Ken Location

Honestly, the location is what sold me on this place. You’re literally a three-minute walk from South Kensington tube station, which means the Natural History Museum, V&A, and Science Museum are all within stumbling distance. But here’s what the guidebooks don’t tell you — Exhibition Road has been completely pedestrianized, so it’s actually pleasant to wander between museums without dodging London traffic. The whole area feels like a village within the city, with proper neighborhood pubs and that little Waitrose on Gloucester Road where locals do their shopping.

The Apartment Experience

This four-star retreat gets the apartment-hotel concept absolutely right. My room — well, it was more like a small flat really — had everything I actually needed rather than a bunch of stuff I’d never use. The kitchen was compact but functional, with a proper fridge and decent cookware, which came in handy when I grabbed fresh ingredients from the weekend farmers market on Bute Street. The living area didn’t feel cramped, and I mean that — London accommodation can be notoriously tight on space.

Neighborhood Gems

What I loved about staying here was how quickly you settle into the rhythm of the area. There’s this brilliant little French restaurant called Garnier just around the corner that locals frequent, and the staff at South Kensington Retreat actually recommended it — none of that tourist trap nonsense. The Royal Albert Hall is close enough that you can catch evening performances without the hassle of crossing the city, and Hyde Park’s literally across the road when you need some green space.

Why Guests Love It

The thing about this place is that it gets the balance right between hotel service and apartment independence. You’re not dealing with crowded hotel lobbies or fighting for elevators with tour groups, but you still get proper housekeeping and someone to call if something goes wrong. The 9.7 rating makes sense when you experience how seamlessly everything works — the WiFi actually functions properly, the heating responds when you adjust it, and there’s decent parking available if you’re mad enough to drive in central London. It’s the sort of place where you can imagine living for a week or a month, not just surviving a few nights.

"Fantastic London Apartment"
The apartment was fantastic. It was super clean and comfortable! It was quite large and in a really nice building with great reception staff. The location was really good. Just minutes from the Gloucester Road station and so easy to get everywhere we wanted to go. Gianluca was easy to communicate with and helpful. We would definitely stay here again!

"Spacious, comfortable home away from home during a week-long holiday with our family."
Close proximity to the Underground station and grocery stores. Spacious for our family of 4 and outfitted with everything you might need- coffee, tea, hair dryer, extra linen, kitchen amenities etc. Host was incredibly responsive and pick up of keys very convenient.

"Great option. I would return"
My daughters and I really enjoyed this accommodation due to the location, number of sleeping options (2 sofa beds and 1 double bed), and the amenities. The owner responded promptly to my questions. There was an instruction manual provided in an electronic mode. It would be great if a printed copy was made available in the property for ease of reference.
What could be improved: 1. The tall, steep stairs that were not part of the description. It was very difficult carrying 3 very heavy and large suitcases. 2. The shower drain was clogged and the shower head was spraying in different directions, instead of down). I had to go into a cold shower and clean out the little spray knobs so that the water could flow downwards. This made me wonder how clean the shower really was if these items were not identified by the cleaning crew.

"Great South Kensington apartment!"
We stayed in this apartment as a group of three, and it was very important for us to have three proper separate sleeping places, which this flat provided perfectly. The check-in was super easy: we collected the keys just next to the building, so there was no need to wait or call anyone. We were also allowed to leave our luggage before the official check-in time, which saved us from searching for a storage locker. The apartment is bright, spacious, and very comfortable for three people. There are plenty of local TV channels, a fan (though we didn’t need it – even in August London wasn’t too hot). All the appliances, including the washing machine, oven, and microwave, worked perfectly. The bathroom was great too, with an excellent heated towel rail. As a nice touch, the host even left us coffee capsules, thanks for that! The building has a rubbish chute, which is very convenient as we didn’t have to go outside looking for bins. There’s also a Sainsbury’s supermarket right nearby, and home delivery works wonderfully if you prefer to order groceries in. The location is absolutely fantastic: just a 20-minute walk to Kensington Gardens, and only 5 minutes to the Underground, where several lines connect. Just in the same building as Underground, there’s a lovely Blank Street coffee shop. We truly enjoyed our stay and would definitely love to return!

"Perfect location, spotless clean, comfortable beds and rooms, and excellent amenities. Best choice!"
Wonderful place to stay with a very helpful host! The apartment is in a great location, just a few minutes’ walk from Gloucester Road tube station and 2 minutes from a Sainsbury’s. We travelled with two kids (13 and 10), and the bed set up for them in the living room was super comfortable — not just a simple guest bed, but a proper, cozy sleeping arrangement with perfect blackout curtains. The separate bedroom had large, comfy wardrobes with hangers, we didn’t miss a thing. The kitchen was well equipped with everything we needed — capsule coffee machine, toaster, microwave, etc. The flat was spotlessly clean, and the Wi-Fi worked perfectly. We’ve been to London several times, but if this place is available next time, we’ll definitely book it again!
What could be improved: We didn’t miss a thing. One thing that might seem a bit unusual from a European point of view is that when you enter the apartment, there’s a long staircase leading down to the flat — but once you're there, everything you need is right at hand. The only thing to keep in mind is that it might not be ideal for people with limited mobility or difficulty with stairs — for everyone else, it’s absolutely perfect! In London, we usually have to make compromises, and go for a cheaper place and sacrifice some quality. But that’s definitely not the case here. You get more than what you pay for!

"Definitely recommend!!"
It was an absolutely lovely experience. The apartment itself was clean, comfortable, and felt like a true home away from home and turned out to be the perfect base for exploring London. One of the highlights for me was how close everything was. Hyde Park is just a short walk away, ideal for morning strolls or a relaxed afternoon picnic. I also loved being able to walk to Notting Hill and the sunny weather made it perfect! There are plenty of cafes, shops, and restaurants nearby, and Gloucester Road station made it super easy to get around the rest of the city. It really added something special to my trip. Definitely recomend!!
