First Impressions
When I first pulled up to Serene 5BR – A Cozy Home Away From Home in Theydon Bois, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect. This three-star property sits quietly in one of Essex’s most charming villages, and right away you can tell it’s designed for families or groups who want space to spread out. The whole setup feels more like staying at a friend’s house than checking into a typical hotel — which, given the name, is exactly what they’re going for.
The Space and Layout
What struck me immediately was how thoughtfully this place is laid out. Each room has its own personality, and with five bedrooms, there’s genuinely enough space for everyone to have their privacy. The kitchen is probably the real star here — it’s fully equipped and actually functional, not one of those hotel kitchenettes where you can barely make toast. I mean, you could legitimately cook Sunday roast for the whole family if you wanted to.
Location and Village Life
Theydon Bois is one of those Essex villages that feels properly English without being touristy about it. You’re basically on the edge of Epping Forest, which means you can walk straight into ancient woodland from your doorstep. The Central Line runs right through the village too, so getting into London is surprisingly easy — about 45 minutes to Liverpool Street, though honestly, once you’re settled in here, you might not want to leave.
What Makes It Work
The whole experience feels refreshingly unhotel-like, if that makes sense. There’s no lobby to navigate, no reception desk drama — just a comfortable home base where you can actually live for a few days. The parking situation is straightforward too, which anyone who’s driven around London will appreciate. You know what really sold me though? The little touches that show someone actually cares about the guest experience, not just ticking boxes on a checklist.
Why Guests Love It
This isn’t the sort of place where you’ll find a fancy spa or white-glove service, but that’s not really the point. Families love it because kids can actually be kids without worrying about disturbing other hotel guests. Groups of friends appreciate having a proper base where they can hang out together instead of cramming into tiny hotel rooms. The whole setup just makes sense if you want to experience this corner of Essex properly, rather than just passing through on your way somewhere else.
You'll need to let the property know in advance what time you'll arrive.
