First Impressions
You know what? Royal Wharf by the Thames is one of those places that sneaks up on you. It’s tucked away in London’s Royal Wharf development in Newham, and honestly, when I first arrived at John Cabot House, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. This unique boutique hotel without official star rating doesn’t fit into any neat category — and that’s actually what makes it interesting. The whole area has this modern, almost Scandinavian feel that’s completely different from central London’s chaos.
Location & Getting Around
Here’s the thing about staying in Royal Wharf — you’re right on the Thames, which means incredible river views, but you’re also in Zone 3, so it’s not exactly walking distance to Big Ben. The Custom House DLR station is your lifeline here, and it’ll get you to Canary Wharf in about 10 minutes or Bank in 20. I mean, there’s something quite peaceful about watching the Thames flow by from your window, especially when you realize how much you’d pay for a similar view in Zone 1.
The Living Space
What struck me most was how these feel more like serviced apartments than traditional hotel rooms. Each apartment comes with a proper kitchen, which is brilliant if you’re staying more than a couple of nights or traveling with family. The furnishing is modern and clean — think IKEA but done well. The room layouts are actually quite generous by London standards, and you get that new-build feeling where everything just works properly (revolutionary concept, I know).
The Neighborhood Experience
Royal Wharf itself is this planned community that feels almost like you’ve stepped into a different city entirely. There’s a Waitrose downstairs, which becomes your best friend when you’ve got that kitchen to use. The riverside walkway is perfect for morning runs or evening strolls — it stretches for miles along the Thames Path. You’ll spot the occasional river bus chugging past, and on clear days, you can see right across to the O2. It’s not buzzing with tourists, which means you get a glimpse of how actual Londoners live in these newer developments.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea — if you want to stumble out of your hotel straight onto Oxford Street, this isn’t your place. But if you’re after space, modern amenities, and that rare thing in London (value for money), it really works. The parking situation is sorted, which is practically unheard of in most London hotels. Plus, there’s something quite satisfying about having your own little London base where you can actually cook breakfast and spread out properly. It’s particularly clever for longer stays or if you’re working remotely — you get the hotel service when you need it, but the independence of your own space.
Locals suggest to book apartments in London around South Bank for riverside dining, market stops, and easy city crossings.
You'll need to let the property know in advance what time you'll arrive.
