First Impressions
Walking up to Popham Gardens House on Lower Richmond Road, you immediately get that feeling you’ve stumbled onto something special. It’s not flashy or trying too hard — just this elegant Victorian townhouse that somehow perfectly captures what you’d want a London guesthouse to be. The building itself has that classic Richmond character, and honestly, you can tell the owners actually care about the place just from how well-maintained everything looks.
Location & Local Charm
Here’s what I love about this spot in Richmond — you’re literally a stone’s throw from Kew Gardens (which is incredible if you haven’t been), but it still feels like you’re in a proper London neighborhood rather than some touristy bubble. The area around Lower Richmond Road has this lovely residential vibe, with actual locals walking their dogs and grabbing coffee. You can walk to Richmond town center in about ten minutes, or hop on the District line and be in central London within the hour.
The Room Experience
The rooms here really surprised me — they’ve managed to keep that period charm without making you feel like you’re staying in a museum. Each room is individually decorated, and you know what, it actually works. I stayed in one with these gorgeous tall windows that let in amazing natural light, and the bed was properly comfortable (not always a given in these older buildings). The bathroom was compact but well thought out, with a good shower that actually had decent water pressure.
Dining & Atmosphere
While there isn’t a full restaurant on-site, breakfast is served in this lovely dining room that feels more like you’re in someone’s elegant home than a hotel. The continental spread is simple but good quality — proper coffee, fresh pastries, and they’ll do you a cooked breakfast if you ask nicely. What I really appreciated was how relaxed everything felt; no rushing around or formality, just a genuinely welcoming atmosphere that makes this three-star place feel much more personal than bigger hotels.
Why Guests Love It
Look, if you’re after a massive gym or 24-hour room service, this isn’t your place. But if you want to stay somewhere that feels authentically London, with owners who clearly take pride in what they do, then Popham Gardens House hits the mark perfectly. The value for money is excellent for this part of London, and there’s something refreshing about staying somewhere that focuses on getting the basics absolutely right rather than trying to be everything to everyone. Plus, having Kew Gardens basically on your doorstep is pretty special — I ended up spending way more time there than I’d planned, which wasn’t exactly a hardship.
