Oxford Hotel
First Impressions
Walking up to the Oxford Hotel on Penywern Road, you’ll notice it’s actually spread across a few connected Victorian townhouses — which honestly gives it more character than your typical chain hotel. The entrance feels properly British without being stuffy, and the staff genuinely seem to know what they’re doing. I mean, it’s not trying to be something it isn’t, which I appreciate in a three-star place.
Location & Getting Around
Here’s what I love about this spot in Kensington and Chelsea — you’re close enough to Earl’s Court tube station that you won’t be dragging your luggage for ages, but far enough from the main tourist chaos to actually get some sleep. The area has that residential London feel with proper pubs and corner shops, not just souvenir stands. You know what’s really handy? There’s decent parking nearby if you’re brave enough to drive in London, though honestly the tube connections make a car pretty unnecessary.
The Room Experience
My room was smaller than what you’d get in an American hotel — but that’s London for you. What impressed me was how they’d actually thought about the space, with clever storage solutions and a decent-sized window that let in proper natural light. The bathroom was compact but well-designed, and the shower had good pressure, which isn’t always a given in older London buildings. The bed was comfortable enough that I didn’t wake up feeling like I’d been wrestling with it all night.
Breakfast & Dining
The breakfast setup is pretty straightforward — nothing fancy, but they do a proper English breakfast if that’s your thing, plus continental options for lighter appetites. I actually preferred grabbing coffee and pastries from the little café down the street some mornings, but it’s nice having the option right there in the hotel. There’s no full restaurant on-site, but given the neighborhood’s dining scene, you’re really not missing out.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t going to wow you with flashy amenities or designer everything, but it gets the fundamentals right. The location gives you easy access to South Kensington’s museums, Hyde Park, and the West End without paying Mayfair prices. The staff are helpful without being overly formal, and the building has that authentic London character that you can’t fake in newer hotels. For the money, especially if you’re planning to spend most of your time exploring the city rather than lounging in your room, it’s a solid choice that won’t leave you feeling like you’ve compromised on comfort.
Savvy travelers reserve a hotel in London before spring brings blossom-lined parks, pop-up exhibitions, and warm evening strolls.
