Montcalm Brewery Townhouse
First Impressions
Walking up to Montcalm Brewery Townhouse on Chiswell Street, you’d honestly never guess what you’re about to step into. The Georgian facade looks perfectly respectable — maybe even a bit reserved — but once you’re through those doors, it’s clear this five-star boutique hotel has some serious personality. The lobby hits you with this warm, craft-brewery-meets-luxury vibe that somehow works brilliantly, and you can immediately tell this isn’t your typical London hotel experience.
The Neighborhood Charm
Here’s what I love about the location — you’re right on the edge of Islington and the City, which means you get the best of both worlds. Barbican Centre is literally a five-minute walk away, and you’ve got all these fantastic gastropubs tucked into the surrounding streets that most tourists never discover. The area feels properly London without being touristy, if you know what I mean. Plus, you can actually walk to places like Borough Market or catch the Northern line at Old Street without the hassle of central London crowds.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in had this brilliant industrial-chic thing going on — exposed brick walls, copper fixtures, and honestly some of the most comfortable bedding I’ve encountered in years. What really impressed me was the attention to detail: proper blackout curtains (crucial in a city that never quite gets dark), a rainfall shower that actually has decent pressure, and little touches like locally-sourced toiletries. The space feels intimate rather than cramped, which is quite an achievement in London’s property market.
Dining and Social Spaces
The ground-floor restaurant deserves its own mention — they’re doing this modern British menu with a craft beer focus that’s genuinely exciting. I mean, you could easily eat here even if you weren’t staying at the hotel. The atmosphere strikes that perfect balance between sophisticated and relaxed, and the staff actually know their stuff when it comes to beer pairings. There’s also this cozy lounge area where you can grab a drink without feeling like you’re in a hotel lobby, which I really appreciated after long days exploring the city.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this place gets luxury hospitality right without being stuffy about it. The service feels genuinely warm rather than scripted, and there’s something refreshing about a high-end hotel that doesn’t take itself too seriously. You’re getting all the five-star amenities — the Egyptian cotton sheets, the premium location, the impeccable housekeeping — but wrapped up in this wonderfully unpretentious package. It’s the sort of place that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something special, even though you’re staying right in the heart of one of the world’s most visited cities.
