First Impressions
I’ll be honest — London Ilford town house caught me off guard, and not in the way you’d hope. Walking up to this three-star property on Mortlake Road, I kept double-checking the address because something felt… off. The building itself looks tired, like it’s been fighting a losing battle against time and weather for years now.
Location Reality Check
Here’s the thing about Ilford — it’s not exactly the London postcard you’re probably picturing. You’re looking at Zone 4 on the tube map, which means a solid 30-40 minutes into central London on a good day. The neighborhood has its working-class charm, sure, but honestly, it feels more like you’re staying in someone’s forgotten corner of suburbia than experiencing London proper.
The Room Situation
My room was… well, it existed. The décor seemed stuck somewhere in the early 2000s, with that particular shade of beige that screams “we haven’t updated anything in decades.” The bed was firm enough, I suppose, but the whole space felt cramped and oddly configured — like they’d chopped up a larger house without really thinking through how people actually live in these spaces.
What’s Actually There
Don’t expect much in terms of amenities or service. There’s no restaurant to speak of, no real common areas where you’d want to hang out, and the staff presence is… minimal. The Wi-Fi worked most of the time, which I guess counts as a win these days. Parking is technically available on the street, but good luck finding a spot during busy periods — you know how London residential areas can be.
The Bottom Line
Look, I get it — London accommodation is expensive, and sometimes you just need a bed for the night. But honestly, this place feels like it’s coasting on the bare minimum. If you’re thinking about staying here, you’re probably better off looking at hostels closer to central London or even considering areas like Stratford that give you better transport links for similar money. The house might work if you’re visiting family in the area and literally just need somewhere to sleep, but as a base for exploring London? There are definitely better options out there that won’t leave you feeling like you’ve settled for less than you deserved.
