Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to London Butterfly on Kingsland Road, you’ll notice it doesn’t scream “hotel” at first glance. This unique boutique hotel operates without an official star rating — and honestly, that’s part of its charm. The building blends into Hackney’s eclectic streetscape, but once you step inside, you realize you’ve found something genuinely different in London‘s hotel scene.
The Hackney Experience
This part of Hackney is where the city feels most alive, I think. You’re right in the thick of East London’s creative buzz, with Broadway Market just a short walk away and some of the best Vietnamese food in the city practically on your doorstep. The area’s got this perfect mix of proper locals and creative types — you know, the kind of neighborhood where you’ll find a vintage furniture shop next to a family-run Turkish grocery.
The Room and Space
The room I stayed in was compact but thoughtfully designed, with quirky touches that felt intentional rather than trying too hard. The butterfly motif appears throughout — not overwhelming, just enough to remind you where you are. What I appreciated most was how quiet it was despite being on a busy road; they’ve clearly invested in proper soundproofing, which makes all the difference when you’re trying to sleep off jet lag.
Local Flavor
There isn’t a traditional hotel restaurant, but that’s actually perfect for this location. Some of London’s most interesting eating spots are within a five-minute walk — from the Vietnamese joints on Kingsland Road to the weekend food stalls at Broadway Market. The staff genuinely know the area and their recommendations led me to places I never would’ve found otherwise. Plus, there’s decent coffee right downstairs, which is honestly all I need first thing in the morning.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t for everyone — if you want marble lobbies and 24-hour room service, you’ll be disappointed. But if you’re after something authentic and want to experience London beyond the tourist zones, London Butterfly delivers something most hotels can’t. The parking situation is typical East London (meaning, well, challenging), but the transport links are solid with several bus routes and Hoxton station nearby. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re staying in a real neighborhood rather than a hotel bubble, and sometimes that’s exactly what a trip to London needs.

"Small, cheap but handy flat."
Handy location, if a bit noisy as on a busy road. The flat was small, but ok. It could do with a bit of tlc. The kitchen chairs are too big for he space and at leas one was broken so pointless anyway. They very bright naked bulbs, and only one lamp in one of he rooms, so not terribly relaxing, but all fine if you aren't planning on staying in much.
What could be improved: The two slights of stairs are dark and narrow, so awkward with luggage. here was lots of bubble bath, but no bath, only a shower, so shower gel would have been better. When we arrived he washing machine and tumble dryer where still full of wet bedding & towels. It was late so I didn't message he host about it, I just hung it all out to dry, but looks like they forgot to finish preparing the flat.

"Good location, simple but comfortable accommodation"
Good location, simple but clean accommodation.
What could be improved: Simple decor improvements could be made - such as light shades on bare bulbs etc which would make the apartment feel more inviting.

"good no frills accomodation"
modern bathroom, good water pressure. Apartment was clean and had a bright kitchen area. Close to public transport.
What could be improved: small, no living area, would be hard to fit more than 2-3 adults in kitchen. No wifi (which we knew from description). Pretty average for the price.
