Limehouse Library Hotel
First Impressions
Walking up to Limehouse Library Hotel on Commercial Road, you’d honestly never guess this used to be an actual library — well, until you step inside and see the beautiful original features they’ve kept. It’s this gorgeous Victorian building that’s been transformed into a four-star boutique hotel, and they’ve done it so thoughtfully. The moment you enter, there’s this wonderful sense of literary history mixed with modern comfort that just feels right.
Location & Neighborhood
Tower Hamlets isn’t exactly where most tourists think to stay, but that’s actually what makes this spot so interesting. You’re in proper East London here — the real deal, not some sanitized tourist zone. Limehouse Basin is just a short walk away, and honestly, those canal-side paths are perfect for morning runs or evening strolls. The DLR station at Limehouse connects you to Canary Wharf in minutes, and you can be in central London surprisingly quickly.
The Room Experience
My room had this lovely blend of old and new — high ceilings that reminded you of the building’s library days, but with all the modern touches you actually want. The beds are properly comfortable (none of that rock-hard nonsense), and the bathrooms are well-designed without being flashy. What I really appreciated was the attention to detail — good lighting for reading, plenty of power outlets where you need them, and windows that actually open for fresh air.
Dining & Social Spaces
The ground floor restaurant serves decent British fare with some international options thrown in. Nothing revolutionary, but the ingredients are good quality and the portions are reasonable for London prices. Breakfast is solid — proper full English if you want it, but also lighter options that don’t leave you feeling sluggish. The bar area gets lively in the evenings with a nice mix of hotel guests and locals, which gives the place some genuine character.
Why Guests Love It
You know what really works about this place? It feels authentic without trying too hard. The staff actually know the neighborhood and can point you toward that great Vietnamese place around the corner or the best route to avoid the morning rush. There’s decent parking available too, which is no small thing in this part of London. At 8.6 rating, guests clearly appreciate that it’s not pretending to be something it isn’t — just a well-run, characterful hotel in an area that’s got real London flavor. If you want to experience the city beyond the obvious tourist spots, this is a smart base.
