First Impressions
Kings Cross Grand Stay sits in this converted Victorian building that honestly caught me off guard — in the best way possible. I mean, you walk up to Cromer House and it’s got this solid, no-nonsense Camden character that feels authentically London without trying too hard. The lobby’s got these high ceilings and original features that remind you this four-star property has some real history behind it.
The Neighborhood
Being in Camden puts you right in the thick of things, but not in that touristy Leicester Square way. You’ve got the canal walks literally around the corner — I spent a good hour just wandering along the towpath watching the narrowboats. King’s Cross St. Pancras is close enough that you can actually walk there with luggage, which saves you the Tube fare and the hassle of navigating those escalators during rush hour.
The Room Experience
My room was one of those pleasant surprises where everything just works. The bed was properly comfortable (not too soft, not like sleeping on concrete), and they’d managed to fit a decent-sized desk by the window. What I really appreciated was the shower pressure — you know how hit-or-miss that can be in older London buildings. The decor’s contemporary but not trying to be trendy, which means it won’t look dated in five years.
Local Insights
Here’s what I wish someone had told me: the area comes alive differently throughout the day. Mornings are all about commuters heading to King’s Cross, but by evening it transforms into this interesting mix of locals and visitors exploring the canal-side pubs. There’s this fantastic Indian restaurant called Dishoom just a short walk away that’s worth the queue, and the Camden Market chaos is close enough if you’re into that scene — but far enough that you’re not dealing with the crowds at your doorstep.
Why Guests Keep Coming Back
What struck me most was how the staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood — they gave me walking directions that avoided the busy roads and pointed me toward the quieter canal route to Regent’s Park. The whole place has this refreshingly straightforward approach: good beds, reliable WiFi, hot water that doesn’t run out, and none of that over-designed hotel theater. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need in London, especially when you’re using it as a base to explore rather than hiding away in your room all day.
You'll need to let the property know in advance what time you'll arrive.
