Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Fairbairn Hall Serviced Apartment on Barking Road, you’ll notice it’s not your typical hotel setup — and honestly, that’s what makes it interesting. This apartment-style accommodation sits in East London‘s Plaistow area, and while it might not look like much from the outside, there’s something refreshingly straightforward about the whole operation. The staff actually seem to remember guests, which is pretty rare these days.

The Space

Here’s where this four-star property really delivers — the apartments are genuinely spacious, not those cramped “studio” situations you often get in London. Each unit comes with a proper kitchen, and I mean a real one with full-sized appliances, not just a mini-fridge and microwave. The living areas feel lived-in rather than sterile, which makes longer stays actually comfortable. You know what impressed me most? The Wi-Fi actually works consistently throughout the entire space.

Location Reality Check

Look, Plaistow isn’t Covent Garden — but that’s exactly why it works for certain travelers. You’re about 20 minutes from central London via the District and Hammersmith & City lines, and the Plaistow tube station is maybe a 10-minute walk away. The neighborhood has that authentic East London feel, with proper local pubs and surprisingly good curry houses within walking distance. Plus, parking is actually available here, which anyone who’s driven in London will appreciate.

Daily Life at the Property

The serviced apartment concept means you get housekeeping, but not hovering — they’ll sort you out without making you feel like you’re living in a fishbowl. There’s a small fitness area that’s nothing fancy but gets the job done, and the communal spaces are clean without feeling corporate. The room layouts are practical, with enough storage that you can actually unpack if you’re staying more than a few nights. I’ve stayed in places twice the price that couldn’t manage proper blackout curtains, but they’ve got that sorted here.

Why Guests Keep Coming Back

What really sets this place apart is how it handles the things other London accommodations mess up — reliable hot water, decent water pressure, and heating that actually works. The value proposition is solid, especially if you’re traveling with family or planning an extended stay. You’re not paying for marble lobbies or celebrity chef restaurants, but you are getting a properly functional base in London that won’t drain your budget. The combination of space, location, and reasonable rates makes it the kind of place you’d actually recommend to friends visiting the city.

"Exceptional"
It was exactly like the photo, very spacious, good location with lots of transport links and easy to get to (reccomend bus from canning town station but it is walkable). Apartment has A Lot of books you can read/look through if you have time to kill. A Lot of local shops in the area too.
What could be improved: If you want privacy, the only separate room is the bathroom so keep that in mind if this is a concern for you (it wasnt for us). There is stairs so keep that in mind if you are travelling with suitcases. Honestly no complains just some things other travellers may want to know before staying. Didn't use kitchen facilities so cant comment on it. The 2nd bed is in the "dining" area if that's an issue for you. Would say its ideal for couples or anyone who needs a larger space but we were fine as a 3.

"Ideal for a single person or couple"
Responsiveness of the host when queried parking and code issue for the key box.
What could be improved: The property was listed as a 2-bedroom apartment (with a terrace but no information on how to access the terrace) and it was unclear in the images provided that this property is in fact an open plan studio - the second bed is a bed (if you can call it that) in the dining area. Unfortunately this property was not suitable for myself and my family to stay in and we had to leave and find alternative suitable accommodation. I believe the listing has now been updated. We were given the wrong code for the key box but the owner was responsive when contacted (although not the easiest lockbox to get into due to it being attached to the railings of the stairway). Finally, there was a really unpleasant smell in the apartment - couldn't work out what was causing it but it got worse around the kitchen area. Apartment could do with a bit of TLC.
