Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Ellen Kensington on Barkston Gardens, you immediately sense this isn’t your typical London hotel. The Victorian townhouse facade blends seamlessly into one of Kensington’s quieter residential streets, and honestly, I almost walked past it the first time — which is actually part of its charm. This five-star boutique property feels more like stepping into an elegant private residence than a commercial hotel, and that’s exactly what they’re going for.
The Neighborhood Advantage
You know what’s brilliant about this location? You’re tucked away from the tourist chaos but still ridiculously close to everything that matters. Earl’s Court tube station is literally a three-minute walk, which means you can be in Covent Garden or Oxford Street in fifteen minutes. But here’s the thing — when you step outside, you’re on a tree-lined street where locals walk their dogs and the biggest noise is the occasional taxi. South Kensington’s museums are an easy stroll away, and if you fancy a proper London pub experience, The Blackbird around the corner serves excellent fish and chips.
Luxury in the Details
The room I stayed in was what I’d call understated luxury — think rich fabrics, marble bathrooms, and those little touches that make you feel special without being flashy about it. The bed was genuinely one of the most comfortable I’ve experienced in London, and the Egyptian cotton sheets didn’t hurt either. What impressed me most was the attention to modern needs: plenty of USB ports, excellent WiFi, and a coffee machine that actually makes decent coffee (you’d be surprised how rare that is).
Dining and Amenities
The hotel’s restaurant focuses on modern British cuisine, and while it’s intimate rather than grand, the quality is exceptional. I mean, the chef clearly knows what they’re doing — my lamb was cooked perfectly, and they source ingredients from some excellent local suppliers. The wine list leans heavily toward European selections, which suits the sophisticated but unpretentious vibe perfectly. There’s also a cozy bar area where you can grab a nightcap without feeling like you need to dress up.
Why Guests Love It
Ellen Kensington works because it strikes this perfect balance between luxury and livability. The staff genuinely seem to care about your experience — they remember your name, offer thoughtful recommendations, and handle requests without making you feel like you’re bothering them. It’s the kind of place where business travelers feel at home but couples on a romantic getaway don’t feel out of place either. Plus, with only a handful of rooms, it never feels crowded or impersonal. If you want to experience London like a well-heeled local rather than just another tourist, this is your spot.

Welcoming Hotel. Nice modern decor. Lovely staff. Ideal location for access to Underground.

"Lovely hotel for a London stay ."
The hotel is in an excellent location , very close to the tube station at Earls Court . Just off the high street so tucked away but close to all the amenities. Lovely boutique style hotel , room recently renovated , bed comfortable . They even set out happy birthday for my husband on arrival as we there to celebrate his 60th birthday .
Despite the negatives listed we had a lovely stay and would possibly go back , just hope breakfast service is better .
What could be improved: The room was a bit on the small size which was a shame . The bathroom was recently renovated but the walk in shower flooded when used so you had to tuck the shower head down to try to prevent it .
Coffee machine no instructions so very difficult to use ( yes we did ask ! But got no help)
Air con, could not be adjusted, loud, so turned it off, and a bright green light on ceiling was quite annoying and very light.
No regular Chanel’s on the TV!! I have never stayed in a UK hotel that you can watch BBC or ITV we had to log in to ITV X using our home log in to watch ( which was a pain as had to phone home to try and get details)
And sadly breakfast , the service was shocking ! Great breakfast and lovely breakfast room , but staff very slow to clear and reset tables so it was hard to get a table and you couldn’t find cups etc ! very slow to replenish food items that went out too . Real shame as the breakfast was good once you got it .

Great location. Friendly reception staff.
What could be improved: Breakfast staff not friendly or very helpful. Room very small and bathroom not private at all in room. A sliding door which wasn’t fitted between bathroom and bedroom.
