Destination London Docklands Riverside
First Impressions
Destination London Docklands Riverside sits right along the Thames in what used to be pure industrial wasteland — and honestly, that transformation is part of its charm. This four-star property feels refreshingly modern without trying too hard, and when you step out onto their riverside terrace, you get why they chose this spot. The building itself is sleek but not intimidating, fitting perfectly into London’s ever-evolving Docklands landscape.
Location & Getting Around
Here’s what I love about staying in Newham — you’re close enough to central London that it matters, but far enough out that you’re not paying Mayfair prices. The ExCeL exhibition center is practically next door, which explains why so many business travelers end up here. You’ve got the DLR stations nearby, and honestly, that little train system is one of London’s best-kept secrets for getting around without the Underground crush. The Thames Path runs right past the hotel, so morning walks actually feel peaceful rather than chaotic.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in had floor-to-ceiling windows that made the space feel twice its actual size — clever design, really. What struck me most was how quiet everything was, considering you’re still technically in London. The beds are properly comfortable (none of that rock-hard nonsense some hotels think is sophisticated), and the bathroom had one of those rainfall showers that actually works. Small detail, but the USB ports by the bedside meant I didn’t have to crawl around looking for outlets.
Dining & Common Areas
The restaurant overlooks the Thames, and while the menu isn’t groundbreaking, the fish and chips were better than they had any right to be in a hotel. What I really appreciated was the riverside bar area — it’s where locals actually come for drinks, not just hotel guests, which always feels like a good sign. The staff seem to genuinely know the neighborhood, too, so when you ask for restaurant recommendations, you get actual answers instead of corporate-approved suggestions.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t the kind of place you choose for historic charm or Michelin-starred dining. But if you want a solid, well-run hotel that gives you easy access to both the financial district and central London without the premium pricing, it works perfectly. The 8.9 rating makes sense — guests consistently mention the riverside location, helpful staff, and surprisingly good value. Plus, there’s something satisfying about watching the Thames flow by from your window while planning your next day’s adventures across the city.
