First Impressions
Walking up to Cool Place 02 Academy on Stockwell Park Road, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’ve stumbled onto a film set. This unique boutique hotel occupies a converted Victorian academy building, and honestly — the transformation is pretty striking. The original brick facade still hints at its educational past, but step inside and you’ll find something completely different from your typical London hotel experience.
The Space and Design
What makes this place special is how they’ve kept the building’s character while creating something modern. The high ceilings and original features remain, but they’ve added contemporary touches that actually work. My room had these massive windows — typical of old school buildings — which meant loads of natural light during the day. The design feels intentional rather than trying too hard, if you know what I mean.
Stockwell Neighborhood
I’ll be honest, Stockwell isn’t the first area most tourists consider, but that’s exactly why it works. You’re still in Zone 2, so getting to central London is straightforward via the tube. What’s brilliant is you get to experience a more authentic slice of south London life. There’s a proper Caribbean community here — the food scene alone makes it worth staying in this area. Plus, you’re walking distance to some genuinely good local pubs that haven’t been sanitized for tourists yet.
Practical Details
The hotel doesn’t chase after official star ratings, which actually suits its character. With an 8.5 guest rating, it’s clearly doing something right without needing formal recognition. Staff seem to genuinely care about the place — they know the neighborhood well and give proper recommendations rather than generic tourist suggestions. The building’s academic past means some quirky layout choices, but nothing that gets in the way of a comfortable stay.
Why Guests Love It
This isn’t a place for everyone, and I suspect that’s deliberate. If you want marble lobbies and doormen, look elsewhere. But if you appreciate character, want to experience London beyond the obvious areas, and prefer staying somewhere with actual personality — this works brilliantly. The Victorian architecture gives it gravitas, while the modern conversion keeps it functional. It’s one of those places where the location becomes part of the experience rather than just somewhere to sleep between tourist activities.
