Overview
First Impressions
You know what caught me off guard about Converted church? The name pretty much tells you everything and nothing at the same time. Walking up to this unique boutique hotel without official star rating in Beckenham, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect — but stepping inside an actual converted church that’s now your accommodation is something else entirely. The soaring ceilings and original stonework immediately remind you this place has stories that go back way further than most hotels.
The Space Itself
The apartment setup works really well here, giving you proper space to spread out rather than feeling cramped in a standard hotel room. What I loved was how they’ve kept so many of the original church features — you’ll spot stained glass windows and architectural details that make you pause and actually look around. The kitchen area is compact but functional, which is perfect if you want to grab groceries from the local shops rather than eating out every meal.
Location & Getting Around
Beckenham might not be central London, but that’s actually part of its charm. Beckenham Junction station is your gateway to the city, and the trains run frequently enough that you won’t feel stranded. The neighborhood itself has this quiet, residential feel — you’ll find decent pubs within walking distance and a few local spots that feel genuinely local rather than touristy.
What Makes It Work
The whole converted church concept could easily feel gimmicky, but it doesn’t. There’s something genuinely peaceful about staying in a space that was designed for reflection and community. The acoustics are interesting too — sounds carry differently than in regular buildings, which adds to the unique atmosphere. Parking is available, which is honestly a relief if you’re driving in this part of London.
Why Guests Love It
That 9.4 rating makes sense when you experience the place firsthand. It’s not trying to be something it’s not — there’s no fancy spa or elaborate restaurant, just a thoughtfully converted space that gives you something genuinely different. The combination of historical character and modern comfort hits that sweet spot where you feel like you’re staying somewhere with real personality. Plus, the value compared to central London hotels is pretty compelling, especially when you factor in having actual space to live rather than just sleep.

"Friendly, warm welcome from the owner"
The property was amazing, very quirky and very homely, it had everything we needed and more. The owner was amazing, welcoming, friendly and went above & beyond for us. Breakfast was great too
We will be back as soon as we can.
What could be improved: Absolutely nothing, shame we couldn’t have stayed longer.

"Comfortable room in a location that’s ideal for gigs in Crystal Palace Park"
Siobhan was very accommodating with me checking in slightly earlier than 6pm, the room was comfortable considering the heat and I was provided a fan so I slept great. Ideal location for concert in Crystal Palace Park. Would definitely return
What could be improved: No lock on bathroom door, it was fine while I was there as it was only me and her friend in the property and her friend knew not to open the door if it was closed. But other people might not have that same consideration or thought

"Refreshingly different and made my business trip an enjoyable experience."
Lovely quirky building in a great location with parking. Siobahn was very accommodating and lovely company too. I would happily stay there again - such a wonderful alternative to the usual corporate chain hotels. Highly recommend.
What could be improved: NA.

"Very good"
Siobhan was very friendly, and there was a small bottle of wine in the room when I arrived, which was great after a long trip. One of the most comfortable beds I have slept in for a long time.

"It was a very eclectic home. Felt I was in a song."
You go for the interesting home. I only met one host that weekend who was very interesting. My baby enjoyed the different parts to explore. Good parking. On site, but free parking everywhere. Clock house nearby so close transport to London. Good kitchen. Clean room. Soft bed. Can put travel cot in smallest of the rooms. Feels like a big space. Great big bath. Very clean. Really likeable place due to a feeling of size. Comfortable living room. Very likeable people and household.
What could be improved: Maybe recommend a little more storage space. Smaller rooms means less place for luggage so maybe a little more space for things. Some women and ex-survivors of different kinds struggle with bathrooms with no locks. Felt it was a very safe home though.

"Exceptional"
Incredibly beautiful little space to stay in, perfect room size for myself and my partner, comfiest bed ever. Host was exceptional, and more than helpful providing information on local transport options for us. Location was a perfect distance from Crystal Palace Park, ideal for us visiting a music festival. Room was clean with big windows for lots of natural light. Absolutely loved staying here
