This unique boutique hotel without official star rating sits along Thames Road in London’s Newham area, and while that might not sound glamorous on paper, there’s something refreshingly authentic about the whole setup. The building itself has this modern, clean-lined look that feels more like a well-designed apartment complex than your typical hotel — which, as it turns out, is exactly the vibe they’re going for.

The Royal Wharf Neighborhood

You know what surprised me most? How quiet this part of East London actually is, especially considering you’re still properly connected to central London. Royal Wharf is one of those newer developments that locals are still discovering, tucked along the Thames with genuine waterfront views. The Emirates Air Line cable car is practically on your doorstep — I mean, how many hotels can say that? It’s not Covent Garden buzzing with tourists, but that’s honestly part of the appeal.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in felt more like a short-term rental than a hotel room — and I mean that as a compliment. Everything’s been thought through with actual living in mind: a proper kitchenette with decent counter space, storage that makes sense, and windows that actually open (you’d be amazed how rare that is in London). The design leans modern without being cold, with warm wood accents and neutral tones that don’t scream “hotel chain.” The bed was genuinely comfortable too, which isn’t always a given at boutique places.

Amenities and Practicalities

There’s no fancy spa or elaborate restaurant setup here, but that’s not really the point of City Escape. What they do have works well — decent parking options (a genuine rarity in London), reliable WiFi, and housekeeping that doesn’t feel intrusive. "Great place to stay close to London City Air"
Lovely apartment. Comfy beds. Good location just needs a few touches to make it perfect.
What could be improved: There was no tea or coffee, bottle of water or anything. The kitchen tap is labelled incorrectly. If you turn it to cold, you get very hot water! A bath mat and a tea towel would have been useful

"Perfect for the Excel centre. Will be booking again."
Great apartment, comfortable and reasonably equipped. A couple of minor things reported to the host, but generally no issues at all. Location was convenient for a conference I was attending at the Excel centre (maybe a 20 minute walk).
What could be improved: The only downside of the location is that there are not a lot of food shops or other things to do in the immediate vicinity, a couple of small convenience stores about 5 minutes away, and a Sainsbury's local 10-15 minutes walk.

"Superb"
Everything was a really smooth experience, the place is exactly as the pictures and very clean. The location is great, very peaceful and quiet. The owner was amazing and really informative, great communication and made me feel reassured about everything. Definitely will be back here again, would recommend to all my loved ones.

Great location, apartment was clean, well presented, safe and comfortable. Pontoon Dock DLR station is 2 minutes walk. Underground parking is available at small extra charge.

The Apartment was lovely and big, and the bedrooms were cosy and comfortable and the view was ok! The bathroom was modern and big mirror and great lighting too! The kitchen was lovely and clean too!
What could be improved: The Apartment could have utilised the space more, there was only 3 of us and we found the living area quite uncomfortable, the apartment is for 5 people so I personally don't think one sofa and a few chairs is quite enough for the comfort side, a corner sofa would be better to allow people to have more comfort. The windows were quite dirty and there was also no hair dryer which would have been helpful as I forgot to bring mine! The lock was also a bit dodgy on the main door.
